I knew it.

It was natural, having inherited memories from my previous life.

But having memories and actually experiencing it are clearly very different things.

-Hik! It feels like a ghost will appear!

Echo covered its snout with its short front paw, startled. I shared the same feeling.

“How on earth did anyone live in a place like this?”

A complex of old, crowded one-room apartments on a high hill.

At the very top was Seong Do‑yoon’s house, looking every bit like an abandoned home where a ghost could appear at any moment.

According to the rumors I had heard when Seong Do‑yoon moved in, no one had lived there for at least three years. That was also why the rent was only 150,000 won per month.

‘He said he was scammed and ended up in debt.’

Even before becoming an Awakener, Seong Do‑yoon had a history of being an easy target.

He could not refuse when asked for help, paid money here and there, and had been scammed countless times. He had been hit on the back of the head trying to solve things alone, and at one point, almost sold into slavery or had his organs harvested by loan sharks.

It was only thanks to his older brother cleaning things up that he survived. Otherwise, the loan sharks would have sucked him dry.

‘He was a sucker, and luck never favored him either.’

Whenever he tried to earn some money, he inevitably ran into scammers or pyramid schemes.

His luck was astonishingly bad. The more I recalled his past memories, the more bitterly I smiled.

In any case, after the previous incidents, Seong Do‑yoon had cut ties with his older brother. Without money, this abandoned house was the only place he could stay.

‘Anyway, if I want to rank up, I need to be busy running dungeons. Might as well save up some money and move afterward.’

Thinking he needed to work diligently, I pulled the key out of my pocket. True to its appearance, the house was analog, requiring a key to enter.

I inserted the key and opened the door, hearing an unpleasant screeching sound, like nails scratching a blackboard.

Despite its ruined exterior, the interior was quite clean. There were traces of mold in the corners of the walls, but aside from that, it looked like a well-kept 1.5-room apartment.

-Oh? Luckily, no ghosts, huh?

Echo, relieved, wagged its tail vigorously.

“Can you see them?”

-They say dogs see ghosts well. Maybe I can too?

Echo, calling itself a “doggy,” grinned like a person.

“Probably because I’m a white dog, right?”

-It’s on my belly. See? I even have white socks! That makes me a white dog.

If that were the case, the system could have just made it a white dog from the start. Changing the color through the system would have been easy.

I passed the proud Echo, showing off its front paws, and went toward the small room.

There was a thick latex mattress just right for one person, a worn bookshelf crammed with various books, an old study desk, a cheap nonwoven wardrobe, and a dirty plastic drawer unit.

The furniture screamed “poor student living alone.” Since I had inherited Seong Do‑yoon’s memories, the space did not seem too bad to me.

I looked at a photo frame leaning on the desk.

Inside was a tiny Seong Do‑yoon, not even in middle school yet, and a young man in his early twenties. The young man had a nearly expressionless face but smiled faintly, while Seong Do‑yoon in his arms was beaming brightly.

‘A ten-year age difference, right?’

According to memory, the young man was Seong Do‑wan, Seong Do‑yoon’s only blood relative. He had already become an Awakener at the age of ten and participated in the ‘Holy War’ as a child prodigy. He was currently a sub-leader of Horizon, one of Korea’s four major clans, and a 3rd-rank Awakener.

Seong Do‑yoon, when alive, would stare at this photo for a long time before leaving the house. Since only the memories were transmitted, I could not tell what he was thinking when he looked at it.

I stared at the photo for a moment, then removed the clothes dirty with Seong Do‑yoon’s blood and monster fluids.

Echo, perched lightly on my shoulder, let out a startled ‘oops’ and tumbled through the air.

Having removed the clothes, I headed toward the bathroom with Echo still on my shoulder.

“…!”

Seeing Seong Do‑yoon reflected in the bathroom mirror made me flinch in shock.
