In the Name of God - Chapter 10.1
‘Killing them like this is easy enough, but…’
I lowered my hand holding the revolver while staring at the three men expressionlessly. That single action was enough to relieve the tension that had frozen them stiff.
I holstered the revolver and turned without hesitation. Only then did I hear the shouting.
“Hey, hey, aren’t you coming here?! Seong Do‑yoon!”
It seemed the bald man was embarrassed. He had been humiliated by a 9th-rank Awakener he had ignored, and now he had almost been shot. His face had already turned bright red as he shouted behind me.
“You bastard! Do you think you can get away with this?!”
What a fool.
‘Normally, when you shout like that, they might let you go, but then come back and shoot you.’
I glanced at the bald man, who was spouting third-rate villain lines, and shook my head before leaving the alley.
“Master, why did you not kill them?”
Echo, who had been quiet until now, tilted its head cutely and asked.
“Murders inside the city would just be a hassle. The Association is nearby anyway.”
-Aha.
I felt the holster at my waist where the gun was.
The revolver still had six bullets, loaded before arriving at the Association.
Enough to kill all three men.
‘Killing them would be easy.’
As a combat mercenary who had fought in countless battlefields, killing for necessity and justification was nothing.
Since someone had pushed others to the brink of death, it was only fair that they would pay the price if they were killed.
However, I did not want to create unnecessary noise that would restrict my actions.
Moreover…
‘Testing it out would not be bad either.’
I wondered what would happen if I received a quest from the system but did not carry it out.
The answer appeared quickly.
<The detected murderous intent is moving away.>
<The quest has been canceled.>
Once I put some distance between us, a system window appeared confirming the quest had been canceled.
As expected, receiving a quest did not mean it had to be followed blindly. If it were mandatory, a warning would appear, or there would be consequences for failure.
It was not rigid at all. The system was actually quite flexible.
‘Even if it is the same target, would another quest appear if murderous intent exists? That would be worth testing too.’
Judging by the bald man’s glare, he would probably come back for revenge soon. It would be good to check the system’s reaction again then.
I nodded to myself and headed toward Seong Do‑yoon’s house.

Less than ten minutes after Seong Do‑yoon had left, the alley was heavy with silence.
Drip. Drip.
The sound of water droplets hitting the ground echoed unusually loudly.
From the tip of the sword, blood formed droplets and fell, forming small red puddles on the ground.
“Ugh, ugh…”
One of the three men lying on the ground moaned faintly. Beside him, the arm that had been broken earlier lay cleanly severed.
The bald man, his face covered in blood, stared blankly at a single point. His lifeless eyes held an indescribable, horrifying fear.
“You… who… why…”
A man in a black coat, standing over the bald man, moved his sword. The motion was languid but fast, almost imperceptible.
A subtle sound of flesh and bone being sliced cleanly and blood dripping followed. Then came a gurgling sound from the bald man’s mouth as blood sprayed from his severed neck.
The man in the black coat withdrew his gaze from the dead bald man, as if his business was done.
“Clear this.”
Although he was the only living person in the alley, he gave the command as if others were present.
He walked among the dismembered bodies, lightly swinging the sword in the air. Blood left streaked marks on the wall.
After he disappeared, only the three dead bodies remained, their limbs severed.
A few minutes later, when a passerby entered the alley, no corpses or puddles of blood remained.
