In the Name of God - Chapter 2.2
The boy carried an atmosphere very different from the children gathered in the cathedral.
“Instead of wasting time like this, study how to survive. At this rate you will starve to death or be ripped apart by a monster anyway. You will all die regardless.”
He was still young enough to need someone’s help, yet as if denying that fact, his two eyes overflowed with poisonous determination.
Along with that, a fierce will to survive no matter what stood out clearly.
“I will somehow. No matter what I have to do, I will absolutely survive.”
Perhaps it was because he was different from me.
In the world of the game that flowed much faster than the time I felt, before I knew it I was looking down only at that child.
<The wandering god’s affection toward a specific character has passed the required amount.>
<Will you designate this character as the wandering god’s apostle?>
A message I had never seen appeared, but I did not know exactly what it meant to designate an apostle inside this game.
“I do not want to die. I cannot die. I must absolutely survive.”
The boy, brutally slaughtered by the monsters rushing in, forced out his words toward the empty sky where sleet was blowing. His blurred gaze could not even catch me who was looking down at him, but his voice held desperation asking anyone to please hear him.
And I was the only one who heard that voice in the tragic scene where the corpses formed a mountain.
<The wandering god has designated an apostle.>
<The power of the god is being opened.>
<The cost of using the power is the wandering god’s lifespan.>
At the same time as the message, a number was displayed on one side of my vision.
It was a number far too small to be the lifespan of a person.
I could not tell if it was truly my lifespan or if it was a basic setting value for a player entering the real content of the game. It did not matter much.
Even if half of it were taken, I did not have much lifespan left originally, so I willingly decided to use the power.
<With the power of the god, the apostle will be revived.>
<As the price for the power, half of your remaining lifespan will be consumed.>
Unlike me, that boy who had a deep attachment to life mattered. My young apostle surviving was the only important thing.
In the middle of the mountain of corpses, the apostle opened his eyes with a perfect body untouched even by a scratch, and only then did he notice my existence.
“A god. There truly was a god.”
The boy’s two eyes were looking up at the same cloudy sky as when he died, yet something that could not be described had begun to gather in them.
From that day on, I became the boy’s only god and his guardian deity.
For the child who knew nothing, possessed nothing, and had nothing left except the desire to live, I began to arrange many things.
It was not very difficult.
From my place overlooking the world, I could construct everything. Where the boy should go, who he should meet and how he should grow, what luck he should gain and what misfortune he should avoid. I delivered them one by one as messages.
The boy called them an oracle.
However, while he gained many things and grew quickly, he always sought me.
He wanted to meet me, wanted to talk with me, and wished to feel my existence.
“Welcome, Master. You did not come for three months, so I thought you had abandoned me.”
The boy was extremely uneasy whenever I was not watching him.
He always feared that he might be abandoned, that he might become alone again just like when he lost his parents in the disaster.
