In the Name of God - Chapter 70.1
“Aaaagh!”
“Th-the monsters…! Save me!”
The terrified screams of civilians echoed from all directions.
The horrific scene, created by a chaotic mix of various monsters swarming from unknown locations, was truly worthy of being called a living hell.
Bang, bang!
I pulled the trigger toward two beasts that were attempting to attack a civilian. Subsequently, I embedded bullets into the heads of other monsters trying to cut into the evacuation route.
Bang!
Screee!
The loud gunshot was quickly buried by the scream of the monster that had taken a headshot.
Looking at the head of the fallen monster, I gasped for breath and grit my teeth.
‘My aim is shaking.’
I thought I had aimed exactly between the monster’s eyes, but it missed slightly and pierced the left eye. Someone might say, “Well, you still got a headshot,” but for me, possessing Hawkeye, this was an enormous margin of error.
It wasn’t just the hand holding the gun that was the problem.
My vision, which had been flickering intermittently, was now constantly blurry as if filmed over with tears. I couldn’t even aim properly without using Hawkeye, and because I was forced to keep using the skill, a headache and dizziness persisted without end.
“Don’t overdo it.”
Lee Sunho, who had lightly sliced through a nearby monster, approached me with a hardened expression. Habitually, he wrapped one arm around my waist to support me, and I too leaned against him out of habit to take a breather.
“You’ve been shooting with both hands for a while now.”
It couldn’t be helped. If I didn’t do this, it was difficult to even pull the trigger, let alone withstand the recoil.
I looked down at both hands gripping the revolver. Not only my right hand but even my left hand, which was holding the gun together with it, was trembling with fine spasms.
“You might be ignoring it because you’ve reduced the pain, but in your current state, the recoil will only feel even greater.”
Just as Lee Sunho said, the afterimage of the gunshot I just fired remained deeply in the inside of my wrist.
The pain was suppressed, but the sensation of the recoil twisting through my joints was vivid. Because my energy was exhausted, the angles of the muscles and the distribution paths of force I had adjusted to absorb the recoil had changed significantly.
This thin wrist and these gaunt arms had to bear the resulting damage in its entirety.
Still, it was okay for now.
“It’s manageable.”
Even if there’s a feeling of the sensation in both arms disappearing as time goes by, my limbs are still intact, aren’t they?
At this level, I could still fight for a good while longer.
Of course, precise marksmanship like before would be difficult, but I could just aim while accounting for the fact that I might miss. It’s not as if I have to accurately target a tiny central axis like I did when facing the Holy Land fragments.
Above all, I couldn’t just stand by and watch civilians, who aren’t even Awakeners, be trampled by monsters.
“…You have a bad habit.”
Turning my gaze at the bleak murmur, I saw Lee Sunho’s cold and sharp eyes directed at me.
“You don’t know when to stop.”
I felt strength enter the arm Lee Sunho had wrapped around my waist. His head tilted crookedly as if he were displeased.
“Or is it because of me? Are you saying there’s no need to look out for your body because you have a painkiller?”
Lee Sunho’s voice dropped even lower. It sounded like he was muttering to himself, yet the hint of him coldly rebuking me was unmistakable.
‘What’s wrong with this guy again?’
Whenever Lee Sunho pressed me with such an eerie feeling, a strange sense of anxiety brushed down my spine.
It felt as if my spiritual body, having detected something, was urgently sending a warning, rather than Seong Do-yoon’s physical body.
However…
‘In the end, he’s just worried about me.’
I think there’s a bit of a problem with his attitude, but regardless, it remains unchanged that Lee Sunho is worried about me. Since I’ve given him plenty of reasons to worry in many ways, I could understand this guy’s sensitive reaction.
‘He even saw me vomiting blood and passing out right in front of him, so how could he not worry?’
If I were him and Lee Sunho showed me the same sight, I might have made him rest even if I had to shoot him with a tranquilizer dart by now. Even just today, the number of monsters Lee Sunho has sliced through already exceeds a hundred.
Considering he spent the whole time cutting down the Holy Land fragments that were constantly regenerating, it wouldn’t be surprising if he had collapsed long ago.
He is the possessor of an enviably insane amount of stamina.
Looking at the frail me through the eyes of such a guy, how frustrating must it be for him?
While still leaning on Lee Sunho, I lightly tapped his chest with the back of my hand.
“Yeah, it’s because of you.”
A crease appeared between Lee Sunho’s fine eyebrows.
Strangely, that frown brought about a curious sense of déjà vu in his eyes, which usually looked so alien. That rebellious glint mixed with affection… where had I seen that before?
Rummaging through Seong Do-yoon’s memories to no avail, I gave Lee Sunho a smirk.
“When I have a guy like you right here who will catch me even if I collapse from shooting my heart out, what’s there to worry about?”
Those aren’t empty words.
With my reliable painkiller and partner right beside me, what is there to worry about?
