As someone who already knew of his tireless stamina and flawless skills, I had no choice but to trust Lee Sunho.
At the very least, this kind guy wouldn’t leave me to die a miserable death on the street, right?
“If I happen to collapse, make sure to carry me back on your back. I’m counting on you.”
Despite being words I could never say to anyone else, they flowed out strangely easily toward Lee Sunho. Even the phrase “I’m counting on you.”
Feeling the strength slowly drain from Lee Sunho’s arm, I stepped away from him without much difficulty.
Thanks to leaning on him for a brief rest, my breathing had stabilized a bit, and the numbness in both arms had lessened significantly. Seeing that the pain had decreased even further, it seemed Lee Sunho had once again used his ability without me realizing it.
Even if it was an ability used without imbuing mana, a cumulative number of uses would surely put a strain on his body, yet Lee Sunho seemed completely unconcerned by such things.
‘He really is a kind guy.’
While refilling the revolver with new bullets, I turned toward Lee Sunho to offer my thanks.
The fellow was staring intently at me while covering his face with one hand. For some reason, the tips of his ears were red.
“Lee Sunho?”
Just as I was stepping back toward the silently standing Lee Sunho.
One of the Awakeners helping with the evacuation of others shouted toward us.
“Support has arrived!”
They’re finally here.
I scanned the surroundings while letting out a sigh of relief. In the distance, I could see several newly joined Awakeners quickly clearing out the monsters.
As a result of observing them closely with Hawkeye, I was able to confirm the emblems of Horizon and Black Tail. It seemed the two clans in charge of investigating the Daejeon Holy Land had moved first.
If it were Horizon, one of South Korea’s four major clans, and the large scale clan Black Tail, they wouldn’t have sent mediocre clan members in a situation like this.
‘Now I can finally get some rest.’
Once the tension was released, sensation momentarily vanished from these damn toothpick-like legs.
Fortunately, Lee Sunho, whom I was counting on, supported me in an instant. He took the revolver that felt heavy as if snatching it away, and tucked it carefully into the holster for me.
“If you feel like you’re going to faint, you can go ahead.”
“I’m not quite at that point, you know?”
What does he take my mental fortitude for?
“Give me your back. Carry me.”
“There’s a scabbard on my back, so I can’t carry you that way.”
Responding with a smiling face as usual, Lee Sunho picked me up in a familiar embrace. It was embarrassing, but I felt like I had become quite accustomed to being held like this too.
“This is humiliating…”
“Then don’t overdo it.”
I turned my head with a disgruntled expression since I had nothing to say.
In my eyes, which had not yet deactivated the ability to monitor the surroundings, I saw our investigation team leader approaching us quickly. As if proving he had fought as many battles as we had, his disheveled clothes were stained with the blood and fluids of various monsters.
“You both worked hard. We’ve set up a temporary headquarters in that building over there, so let’s move there and rest for now.”
The place the leader pointed to was the Daejeon Convention Center. With its large lobby and numerous meeting rooms, it was the perfect place to set up a temporary headquarters and organize personnel and the situation.
“What happened with the resident evacuation?”
“Fortunately, most have been evacuated safely. Since the Association and the Daejeon clans are blockading the entrances to each dungeon, the streets will be cleared soon as well.”
I felt relieved once more at the leader’s kind answer. If support from the Association side had arrived along with the two clans, there was no longer a need for us to push ourselves.
Only then did I deactivate the Hawkeye I had been keeping active. In an instant, my vision grew murky and my focus went out so much that I couldn’t distinguish a single thing. I couldn’t even properly make out my own fingers held right in front of me.
I was pressing my tired eyes with my fingertips when I heard the leader’s voice from the side.
“I heard from the Horizon investigator. They said you were the one who handled all the monsters that appeared when the Holy Land shattered, Mr. Seong Do-yoon.”
“No, I just rode on the coattails of what the others were fighting. If I had been alone, I wouldn’t have been able to catch a single one properly.”
Though I added a bit of modesty, it was true that I was able to clear the scene without incident thanks to the other three. If they hadn’t tied down the monsters’ feet and blocked every single attack, it would have been by no means easy to shatter the central axes while evading the muzzles of beasts that were all targeting only me.
“I’d like to hear that story in detail.”
A man suddenly intervened. It was a voice I had heard somewhere before.
Feeling an unusual presence approaching us, I turned my head toward the source of the sound.
My blurry eyes, which had lost focus, caught the man’s silhouette.
“It’s been a while, Mr. Seong Do-yoon.”
I remembered.
The person who had interviewed me and asked a few questions immediately after the promotion exam ended.
It was Nam Ho-jin, a Grade 3 Special Duty Officer belonging to the Association, who had asked if there was anything strange about Lee Sunho.
