Around that time I almost reached the stairs leading to the floor below.
Echo, who had been quiet until now, hopped out of my hood and clung to my shoulder. I heard a sound like him letting out a breath he had been holding.
-It looks like the lower floor has already been mostly cleared!
“That’s a relief. What’s wrong with your face?”
His normally round face was flattened vertically. It seemed he had been squashed inside the hood while I was tied to the bed.
Echo grumbled while stroking his flattened head and chin with one front paw.
-Do you have any idea how much I felt like I was suffocating? Besides, Master couldn’t even hear my voice…
“What? When?”
-From the moment that monster used those strange shadows. Suddenly, it was like the connection was cut, and my voice wouldn’t reach Master.
No wonder it was quiet.
I had briefly forgotten that Echo was inside my hood, so I focused on his words entering my mind.
-Come to think of it, the scan function was acting weird too. It couldn’t properly identify Lee Sunho.
If he was unable to even push his voice through to me, it made sense that the scan function would also have errors.
However, I momentarily froze at his next words.
-On the scan information, it showed up as if the boss monster had increased to two.
“What?”
-Even if it was a temporary error, it’s still strange, right?
Echo’s scan function starts by perfectly distinguishing monsters from other living beings. Even taking the abnormal situation into account, the fact that a mistake occurred from the most basic classification stage was certainly unsettling.
But Echo gave a grin with his flattened snout.
-Still, I guess it was just a simple error caused by the boss monster’s strange shadows. When Lee Sunho kissed Master, he was definitely classified as a proper human…!
Cutting himself off, Echo quickly covered his snout with both front paws. The way he stared off into the distance, showing more of the whites of his eyes than his blue pupils, made it look like he was checking my reaction after realizing he’d said something unnecessary.
Because of that, memories of the kiss with Lee Sunho uselessly flooded back.
Even if the goal was to provoke the boss, was there really a need for such a deep kiss? Even putting his hand inside my pants…
Feeling the heat rise to my face, I pressed down firmly on Echo’s head with one hand.
“Forget it while I’m asking nicely.”
-Hmm-hmm, I’ll try.
Answering while pretending to clear his throat, Echo slipped back into the hood the moment I stepped onto the stairs.
Having completely forgotten the strange scan error because of what Echo just said, I soon stepped down onto the first floor.
Most of the monsters collapsed. I could no longer find the black energy that had swirled around the monsters, all of whom bore marks of being pierced by something.
Just then, I saw Kwon Jeong-han stabbing some kind of fountain pen into the abdomen of the last monster. The black energy vanished from the monster like it was scattering, and its body fell with a thud.
Catching his breath, Kwon Jeong-han finally discovered me.
“Seong Do-yoon!”
Kwon Jeong-han hurried over to me in a single bound, holding the fountain pen dripping with monster blood.
“You’re safe.”
“It looks like you did even better than I expected.”
I hadn’t imagined he would take down every single monster on the first floor in such a short amount of time. I had high expectations because he seemed to have good instincts and excellent judgment, but he had certainly performed beyond that.
After patting Kwon Jeong-han on the shoulder, I followed him toward a large box in the corner of the first floor. According to Kwon Jeong-han, the monsters had put all our weapons in that box while I was upstairs.
“What happened? What about the boss?”
Instead of answering, I pointed a finger upward. Kwon Jeong-han sent me a look that seemed to ask, “How did you get past the boss and come down?” but I didn’t have time for a lengthy explanation.
For the same reason, I didn’t pay much attention to the rest of the group who were groaning and clutching their eyes. Seeing as not even a lingering scent of the flashbang remained, their eyes would recover soon enough.
Taking a revolver out of the weapon box first, I opened the cylinder and loaded the bullets.
Rumble— Thud!
Kwon Jeong-han, who was retrieving his daggers alongside me, stopped his movements at the roar heard from above. A detailed explanation was difficult, but I decided to give him at least an answer regarding the noise.
“Lee Sunho came to help.”
“Lee Sunho? How did he know to go to the second floor…”
Boom!
An even louder roar cut off Kwon Jeong-han’s words. My hands, checking the revolver, moved even faster.
-It doesn’t seem like there are any other monsters nearby.
Echo whispered sensibly.
If there were no monsters nearby, now was the timing to send Kwon Jeong-han and the others away.
Holding the revolver in one hand, I turned toward Kwon Jeong-han urgently.
“Lee Sunho and I will somehow deal with the situation upstairs, so you take the others and join up with the other teams.”
“You two are going to face the boss alone? Are you insane?”
Kwon Jeong-han grabbed my arm and stopped me, glaring fiercely.
