The entire world was wishing for her death, so Elizer had to protect the throne by any means necessary. He would have to hold out at least until the interest in her began to fade.

Elizer bit the inside of his cheek as a matter of habit to snap himself back to reality, turning his steps as if possessed. He felt that if he could just see a living Reyna, everything would be alright.

“…It is too horrific, Elizer.”

However, he could not bring himself to go there.

Since the scholar had discontinued the medicine, Reyna would have regained her senses to some degree by now.

And a Reyna who had regained her senses would not be able to tolerate her husband.

Elizer stopped in his tracks once more without warning. The dozen or so knights and attendants following him could not hide their sudden bewilderment and jerked to a halt.

The next moment, with his breath catching in his throat, Elizer clutched his chest and sank to the floor.

“Your Majesty!”

Sir Lyman quickly supported Elizer.

“Are you alrigh—”

Lyman could not finish his sentence after seeing Elizer’s face.

An ashen complexion like that of a sick man, sunken eyelids, and a body that was endlessly wasting away. Elizer looked as though he had already passed his limit. He appeared more precarious now than during the times he went three days without sleep on the battlefield.

Sir Lyman did not know how to hold onto his sovereign, who was crumbling helplessly. No matter how much he thought about it, the only thing he could do was silently stay by the King’s side.

“…I will escort you to the office.”

Ever since Reyna fell from the balcony attached to his bedroom, Elizer had not set foot in his chamber. Even though he had blocked the door leading to the balcony, his heart simply would not settle. Elizer naturally shut himself away in the office.

He had no need for a bed anyway. He had not slept for an extended period since Kassian died. While Reyna was hovering between life and death, he was terrified to even close his eyes for a moment. He feared that in that brief interval, Reyna might die and leave him behind.

Elizer blinked slowly, unable to close his eyes even as they threatened to shut. A sultry wind drifted in through the open window. As the cold sweat drenching his body dried, a chill took hold of him. It was then that someone knocked urgently on the office door.

“Your Majesty! The Queen is…”

Elizer slowly pulled himself up, feeling a sense of foreboding.

In the middle of the night, the King ran frantically down the hallway.

The guards stationed in the corridor wavered, wondering if their King had gone mad following the Queen, but they managed to maintain their duty by staring straight ahead.

Before the knight guarding the door could announce the King’s arrival, Elizer burst the door open and entered. The scholar and attendants surrounding the bed turned around in startlement.

“Your Majesty.”

After a brief moment of confusion, they noticed the King standing there, gasping for breath, and tactfully moved aside. Reyna, who had been hidden by them, was visible now, sitting at an angle with her back leaning against the pillows.

A complexion as pale as a corpse, a body so gaunt that the bones were visible, and hair that had become dry and brittle. She looked much the same as when he had last seen her.

However, seeing the clear green eyes that held his reflection felt like such a long time coming that Elizer found himself unable to do anything for a moment.

“……”

As the silence stretched, Reyna’s eyes, which had been staring at him with wide, surprised pupils, began to waver with anxiety. Yet, she never once looked away. She seemed terrified, but she appeared more curious about the man who had suddenly barged into her room.

Come to think of it, Reyna had been unable to look at him properly for quite some time.

‘Ever since Priscilla entered the detached palace, she hasn’t tried to meet my eyes for even a second…’

Elizer could not tell how long it had been since his face was reflected in her eyes for this long.

As if possessed, he took a step forward toward Reyna.

Reyna looked around at the others as if flustered. However, everyone kept their heads bowed deeply, avoiding her gaze as if they could neither see nor hear anything. She had no choice but to look back at him. Her gaze was wary.

Elizer slowly knelt before her, as she sat frozen with tension.
