May Every Wound Be Fatal - Chapter 49.2
Thus, Reyna did not know the exact state of her right leg. She only vaguely guessed that it must be in a condition so gruesome that it could not be shown.
‘Will I ever be able to heal?’
When her thoughts reached that point, the worst case scenario suddenly formed in her mind.
Reyna moved her lips, which did not part easily, and asked.
“…Will I be unable to walk in the future?”
At those words, Allin opened her mouth, looking as shocked as if it were her own tragedy.
“My Queen, how could you say such a…”
Thales, who had gently pushed aside the instinctively sobbing Allin, replied in a calm voice.
“If the broken bones knit together well, you will be able to walk again.”
However, Reyna could not be optimistic. Those words meant that the bones might also not knit together well. Falling into a fresh state of shock, she brooded over the things that had happened to her.
‘I became a Queen, fell from a balcony and lost my memory, and now I might become a cripple?’
The more she thought about it, and the more time passed, the harder it was to accept the events that had befallen her.
After Thales and his assistant withdrew, the room was submerged in a gloomy silence.
Unable to endure the vague anxiety, Reyna suddenly muttered.
“Will His Majesty not come today either?”
“…As I told you before, the palace is in an uproar. The King is very busy.”
Of course, it was a fact she knew. Nevertheless, Reyna could not hide her disappointment. Negative thoughts began to dominate her mind.
‘Perhaps the reason the King does not come to see me is…’
Just as she reached the point of thinking she might have been abandoned by the King, Allin approached at that moment and spoke.
“My Queen, I will wipe your body for you. It will surely make you feel better.”
“…Very well. That would be best.”
Reyna nodded, trying to push away her intrusive thoughts.
According to Allin’s instructions, a young housemaid brought warm water, dry cloths, fragrant oils, and a comb. Meanwhile, another girl warmed the room, and yet another girl carefully slipped the silk gown off Reyna’s shoulders. Soon, Allin herself soaked a dry cloth in water and began to meticulously wipe Reyna’s arms.
At the soft touch, Reyna seemed to calm down a little and dropped her gaze blankly. Her dull green eyes followed Allin’s hand movements without much thought.
“…….”
Naturally, her gaunt arms, reduced to skin and bone, came into view. Just as Reyna was reflexively frowning because she disliked the sight.
“…What is this?”
As far as Reyna remembered, there were no scars on her body. Yet, was there not a hideous scar, looking as if it had been sliced by a blade, running long across her right wrist?
An ominous premonition flashed through her mind in an instant, and Reyna quickly lifted her gaze and commanded Allin.
“Bring me a mirror.”
“Pardon? A mirror?”
“Hurry.”
“Ah….”
Allin hesitated for a moment as if flustered, but eventually signaled to a young housemaid watching nearby to fetch a mirror.
And after Reyna held up the mirror and looked at her reflection, she could not say anything for a long time. Looking into the mirror incessantly as if she could not believe it, she muttered in a trembling voice.
“This is me? This, this bag of bones?”
Allin hurriedly recited the words she had been preparing for a while.
“You are still beautiful. It is only because you lost so much weight while you were lying down…”
“Liar.”
“…How could I lie, my Queen?”
However, Reyna was serious. Such hollow flattery did not provide even the slightest comfort. Her ominous premonition had already turned into a certainty.
Dropping the hand holding the mirror as if she had lost all strength, Reyna muttered despondently.
“Now I know the reason why His Majesty has not set foot here since then….”
At the somewhat unexpected statement, Allin felt as if she had been struck on the head.
“What on earth do you mean by that all of a sudden? Why would you think such a thing…?”
“He must have been shocked to see me change like this. With such an ugly appearance, and even my leg…. He intends to abandon me.”
