As usual, the King was sitting on the floor, resting one cheek against the edge of the bed. His lips were so close that they seemed as though they might touch her hand at any moment.

‘What is he doing…?’

His blue eyes, catching the light of the lamp, wavered like waves. The way he blinked slowly made it seem as though he were dozing off. It felt like the first time she had seen him looking so defenseless.

Dazed as if about to fall asleep, the thing he was staring at was none other than her hand. Occasionally, his fingers approached as if to stroke the back of her hand, but they drew away again as if he could not touch her even if he wanted to.

“…….”

Reyna watched that affectionate and cautious movement with bated breath.

It was difficult not to notice how much he cherished her. Aside from the fact that the man before her was a stranger, Reyna could clearly see how he felt about her, to the point that it felt foolish to have ever been confused about his heart.

She became frightened as she realized just how relieved that made her feel.

Feeling her heart swell with a mixture of various emotions, Reyna gazed a little longer at him, whose fingertips only twitched, unable to bring himself to touch her.

His platinum blonde hair caught the orange light, yet at a glance, it looked like starlight.

His blue eyes shone vividly even amidst the dim surroundings.

Such things stood out to her anew.

Allin’s voice naturally echoed in her ears.

“The two princes lost their lives while fighting over the throne, and as the late King returned to the embrace of the gods, the current King ascended to the throne.”

In truth, Reyna was not particularly surprised by the fact that her twenty four year old self had become Queen.

“Reyna Dazbel is the most noble lady in this country, and she will marry a prince to become the Queen in the future.”

That was because everyone had told her so in unison since she was a child.

However, the fact that the King, her husband, was not Prince Tiberian   was quite baffling.

“Next spring, you shall become the consort of Prince Tiberian.”

This was because her father, Leonard Dazbel, had certainly said so.

Thus, Reyna had assumed until now that this handsome man before her was naturally Prince Tiberian.

However, his name was not Tiberian, but Elizer.

Reyna was still full of things she did not know about him. He always wore a face that was difficult to approach, he was a man of few words, and he was not particularly tender.

‘Nevertheless, the one thing I am certain of is…’

The man before her did not seem like someone who would harm her. She could not imagine him hurting her when he acted as if she might break if touched.

At that, her anxiety decreased slightly. She admitted that it was foolish and optimistic.

‘Nevertheless, nevertheless…’

No matter how much she thought about it, the only person she could trust right now was the man before her.

In the meantime, his eyelids, which had been blinking slowly, closed and did not move any further.

So he does actually sleep. Thinking that thought instinctively, Reyna blankly watched his sleeping face before drifting off to sleep herself without realizing it.

***

With her eyes closed quietly, Reyna felt a touch today as well, tickling and stroking her hair.

It was obvious who the owner of the hand was. The King would be the only person in this place who would secretly touch her while she was asleep.

In reality, however, Reyna had not fallen asleep. She was merely pretending to be asleep, keeping her eyes closed still.

After noticing that he touched her while she was asleep, Reyna began pretending to sleep whenever he visited.

It was not because she had some scheme. She simply wanted to catch even a small glimpse of the true feelings of this man who acted so indifferent to her. Only then did she feel somewhat at ease.

As if he had not noticed that she was awake, the hand that had been fiddling with her hair for a long while slowly approached the area of her cheek.

Reyna was not surprised. This sort of thing had happened several times by now. And since he always drew away without being able to make contact, she thought it would be the same this time.

Surprisingly, however, his hand, which had hesitated for a long time near her cheek, slowly touched her skin as if brushing past. A faint shiver ran through her, and she almost opened her eyes.

Of course, it would not have been strange even if she did open them. But she felt as if she had to keep pretending to sleep. She was also curious about what he, acting a little differently than usual, would do next.

A hand, rough and hard with calluses, tickled her cheek as if it were about to cover it. It seemed as though he wanted to cradle her cheek but could not bring himself to do so. She wondered if he was gathering his courage, but in the end, that was all.

Reyna opened her eyes only a long while after his hand had withdrawn.
