May Every Wound Be Fatal - Chapter 58.1
Of course, that did not mean anything changed suddenly.
Elizer visited late at night when the entire palace was asleep, or at dawn. He remained cautious, taciturn, and looked exhausted, like someone haunted by something. It was also the same as before how he would quietly avert his eyes shortly after making eye contact.
Reyna watched the King, Elizer, who was acting quite suspiciously again today. She could feel him stiffen further under her observant gaze.
And now, she knew him a little. He wasn’t annoyed right now; he was nervous.
Thus, she asked him as he looked toward an empty spot.
“How much sleep do you get?”
She asked because his face seemed to be getting increasingly haggard.
After a momentary flinch, his gaze slowly returned. Reyna raised the corners of her lips slightly to welcome that gaze. When she showed him a smile, Elizer briefly forgot to run away.
As expected, his blue eyes lingered on her mouth as if entranced. It had always been difficult to know his thoughts because he was so expressionless, but she felt she roughly understood him since the night he kissed her wrist.
Reyna spoke to him, as he seemed to have forgotten the question in the meantime.
“I don’t think you are sleeping properly.”
Only then did Elizer remember the question, and he agonized over the trivial inquiry for a long time.
Thinking back, he never answered immediately, especially when asked about himself. No, it seemed he couldn’t answer seven out of ten times. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to tell her, but rather, it was as if he didn’t know himself very well either.
‘Hmm… but isn’t this a question that doesn’t require much thought?’
Nevertheless, his expression seemed to grow increasingly serious for some reason, so Reyna became serious along with him.
Frowning slightly, she asked just in case.
“…Surely, closing your eyes here for a moment isn’t the only sleep you get?”
“…”
Elizer tried to say something but kept his mouth shut.
“My goodness…”
And Reyna had just realized that his silence usually meant an affirmation.
She had expected it to some extent, but the fact that closing his eyes for a moment in such an uncomfortable position was all he got was quite a shock. Reyna, becoming immediately grave, pulled back one side of the blanket and spoke.
“It would be better if you slept a bit more.”
It would be a lie to say there was no hidden motive in offering the spot next to her. However, her heart was truly more full of worry for him.
Perhaps she had lifted the blanket too eagerly, as if she had been waiting for this.
“…It is fine.”
Elizer’s eyes trembled violently, and he turned his head completely the other way.
…It seemed that was it for today.
Reyna felt regretful, and at the same time, she felt a bit embarrassed because it looked like she had tried to seduce him and failed. And she was starting to feel a bit slighted by him, as he hadn’t laid a finger on her since that day.
It felt like consideration for her, since she had lost her memory and was unfamiliar with him… but was it really necessary to keep such a distance, as if he would die if they touched?
That didn’t mean her worry for Elizer disappeared, so Reyna quietly closed her eyes.
‘First, I should get him to sleep.’
This was because he only relaxed and closed his eyes for a moment once she fell asleep.
She felt his gaze beyond her closed eyelids. After a long time, she felt his touch fiddling with her hair. Soon, she felt his steady breath on her fingertips, which she had purposely draped near his face.
‘…Is he asleep?’
Reyna, who had been closing her eyes and pretending to sleep, only then opened them slightly. She could faintly see his face, which was perfect like a sculpture. His mouth was slightly parted, and one arm was stretched carelessly above his head.
Reyna quietly pulled the blanket away and carefully raised her upper body to sit up.
Ah.
Her mouth opened involuntarily at the unavoidable pain.
She learned this way that strength is also put into the leg muscles when raising the upper body. Whether she was getting used to it or it was truly getting better, it didn’t feel that painful anymore.
After taking a small breath, Reyna tilted her head and began to scrutinize his sleeping face thoroughly.
His features, flickering in the orange light, had nothing crooked, clumsy, or overly thick. Everything fell perfectly into place as if carved with a very sharp blade.
“…So this man is my husband…”
