That was why, whenever he saw Reyna, who knew nothing and had completely opened her heart to the King, he felt an indescribably complex feeling.

Reyna, who had no way of knowing such things, quickly said,

“But I’m not in any pain at all now. When I stand up on my own, it just feels a little stiff. I don’t think there’s any problem, what do you think, Scholar?”

Her clear green eyes, looking at Thales, sparkled with anticipation. It was transparent what she wanted to hear.

Thales silently gazed at the innocent, pure face of the Queen for a moment, then quietly lowered his gaze and answered.

“…It is not impossible, Your Majesty the Queen.”

“Then that means it’s fine, right?”

“You absolutely must not overexert yourself, but… yes, that is correct.”

A bright smile spread across Reyna’s face, and Allin instinctively held her breath and closed her mouth.

Thales asked Reyna, who was pleased, as usual.

“Do you have any other questions?”

Reyna, after a moment of thought with a peculiar smile on her face as if considering something, soon shook her head.

“No, that’s fine. That’s all for today.”

As Thales bowed his head deeply to Reyna and prepared to withdraw, Reyna called him back.

“Oh, and. I’ll convey this to His Majesty myself this time as well.”

Thales bowed his head once more to her and then quietly left the inner chamber with his assistant.

As soon as they stepped out, the King’s knight followed behind them. He looked like an escort, but in fact, he was a watcher.

Thales did not open his mouth at all on the way back to his quarters. His assistant was the same.

Only after the door closed and they were alone did his assistant let out a long sigh as if relieved and quickly approached Thales.

“Scholar Thales.”

His voice was low and breathy, lest the King’s knight guarding the door outside might hear.

“If this continues, what if Her Majesty the Queen actually conceives?”

Thales’s brow furrowed slightly.

“If His Majesty wishes for that to happen, then so be it…”

“Then, what about Prince Lucian, who is at the separate palace…?”

Thales finally turned his hardened face to his confused assistant.

“If you wish to remain in the palace for a long time, keep your mouth shut. We have neither heard nor seen anything.”

Realizing his mistake, the assistant hurriedly bowed his head.

“…I apologize, Scholar Thales.”

Thales did not reply and went to sit in front of his cluttered desk.

Though he had firmly advised his assistant, in truth, his own mind was more complicated than ever. Because from some point on, things had been flowing completely differently from what he had anticipated.

Reyna should have left Elmarel, the high fortress, by now. That was how it was originally supposed to be.

Thales recalled the audience he had with the King a fortnight ago.

“Her Majesty the Queen has recovered sufficiently to travel by carriage now. With the help of a maid, she could even cross the sea.”

The high fortress had too many eyes and ears, and countless people passed through its gates every day.

Besides, the Queen had already suffered numerous assassination threats. The last assassination attempt before she threw herself into the sea—though it was because the Queen had boldly approached the assassin herself—had nearly succeeded.

Both those who wanted Prince Lucian to be the next king and those who coveted the position of the new queen were hoping for Reyna’s death. Seeing that news of her condition was still slowly leaking out, there were clear limits to keeping Reyna hidden deep within the fortress.

The King was not unaware of this. Therefore, he had planned to send Reyna out of Elmarel without anyone knowing once she was well enough to travel by carriage. Thales had informed the King that the time had come because he knew of that plan.

But for some reason, the King had remained silent, and still had not sent the Queen outside the fortress.

‘Has the King truly decided to choose his wife over his sister-in-law and nephew?’

If so, another bloody storm might break out in the palace.

Thales felt uneasy, but there was nothing he could do but abide by the King’s will.
