Something’s Not Right About This Transmigration - Chapter 11.2
“I didn’t expect them to attack the instant you left the mansion, so I had no chance to tell you, but someone is after you. I haven’t yet discovered who’s behind it or why they want you.”
Regulus looked away with a guilty expression. His pride seemed wounded that he had failed to identify the culprit even after three attacks.
Just as Frey was about to ask when the attacks had begun, Samuel, who had been quietly watching Regulus, spoke sarcastically.
“……How strange. I heard that Your Highness is an unprecedented archmage. Can even such a person’s magic be broken?”
“Do you think magic is omnipotent? Why do you cross swords with an enemy when you fight? Why not just run up and cut off their head at once?”
“That is what I usually do.”
At Samuel’s calm reply, Regulus thumped his chest in frustration.
Growing more exasperated with every word, Regulus swept back his black hair and dropped into a chair.
“Start by putting protection magic around the ducal estate. What kind of noble’s mansion has no magic at all?”
“It is unnecessary.”
“Now it’s necessary, so do it. Ah, you didn’t actually believe that absurd rumor about magic causing Rosifer infections, did you?”
Samuel’s brow furrowed deeply at Regulus’s probing voice.
Apparently, he truly had believed it.
“The people of Norbert are not weak enough to rely on magic.”
House Norbert had a family law declaring that only the strong survived on its estate.
For that reason, even the servants who lived there generally knew how to wield a sword and reacted quickly to the slightest sign of a presence.
Every person on the ducal estate was capable of responding to an outside intrusion.
“But…….”
Samuel trailed off and looked at Frey.
He was embarrassingly short for the average adult man in the empire. His wrist bones were so thin that he did not look capable of properly gripping even a dagger, and his body was so light and frail that a gentle shove seemed enough to send him flying into a distant wall.
He was probably so weak that he wouldn’t last five minutes even against the youngest stable hand on the Norbert estate.
“What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
At Frey’s disgruntled question, Regulus chimed in.
“If you’re thinking of teaching Frey swordsmanship, give up. I tried several times too. It didn’t work.”
“……The safety of a person who will become a member of the ducal house is at stake. I will make a formal request in the house’s name for protection magic.”
“Why go to the trouble of doing it twice when I’m right here?”
Samuel’s eyes narrowed coldly at Regulus’s shameless response. His cutting gaze showed no deference whatsoever to the man’s status as Imperial Crown Prince.
“Ah, of course. You can’t entrust the safety of your mansion to me.”
“…….”
“Then let me put a temporary measure in place, at least. You won’t remain at Frey’s side all day.”
Regulus erased the smile from his face and met Samuel’s eyes.
He clearly meant that, for this moment, they should set aside their political positions and protect Frey’s safety first. Samuel clenched his fist and looked away.
“……Do as you please.”
* * *
Frey pouted at the presence he could feel behind him.
‘……This is uncomfortable.’
For a brief moment, he had been happy to lie on a bed far softer than the one at the Count’s mansion.
“I was taught that spouses sleep together. Lie down.”
Unfortunately, he was now sharing that bed with Samuel.
Unlike Unlike Frey, who had lain awake all night, Samuel seemed to have been sleeping soundly for some time.
“Haa…….”
Frey sighed without realizing it, then hurriedly covered his mouth. When there was no response from behind him, he cautiously moved and tried to climb out of bed.
“Where are you going?”
At that moment, Samuel’s deep voice sounded, and a thick arm wrapped around Frey’s waist.
