When a single incantation from ‘Frey’ could cure the illness instantly, what need was there for research?

“You must not have known. The Rosifer treatment is at the Rubellia estate……. No. Even if we told you, how could a penniless wretch like you ever meet them?”

“Do I look penniless?”

“Hmm?”

“If that is what you thought, you are rather poor judges of people.”

Frey pushed away the arm gripping his collar. Then he removed the nightclothes from his bag and tossed them over.

“These nightclothes are made from the finest fabric.”

The creditors looked between Frey and the garment with incredulous expressions.

‘If he had money, he would’ve handed over money.’

Even Frey found his own behavior absurd. But this was precisely when he had to act shamelessly like a noble who understood nothing of the world.

“Well, the fabric does look fine…….”

“Tsk. Such ignorance. That garment was made from the finest cloth supplied to the imperial palace. It would easily fetch two gold if sold. Surely you understand its value.”

At Frey’s calm words, the eyes of one of the men examining the garment widened. Then he noticed the ducal crest embroidered into it and nudged the man beside him.

“I suppose that’s enough for us to tell you. Have you heard the rumor that several people afflicted with Rosifer recovered?”

“……No, ahem. Yes, I have.”

“Did you know they all came from Count Rubellia’s estate?”

“…….”

“Are you saying someone at House Rubellia can cure Rosifer?”

The men burst into roaring laughter.

“Someone who can cure Rosifer? There’s no such person. There’s a treatment.”

“A treatment?”

“Yes. It’s incomplete, but they say some people took it and recovered. The researcher seems to need more funding, so he slips one or two doses to the people who provide money.”

“Then Sir Herbert went into debt…….”

“To buy that treatment, of course. But many people want it even unfinished, so his turn hasn’t come. Who knows? If he offers the researcher more money, perhaps the man will sneak a dose out for him.”

Ah.

These bastards had been swindling people this way.

How wonderful it would be if a real treatment for Rosifer existed. Even if it were expensive, it would be a blessing if people could simply buy it…….

The problem was that only ‘Frey’ could cure Rosifer in this world.

At this rate, Leo would be left with an enormous debt without ever obtaining medicine.

‘……Pieces of trash.’

What had adorable Leo ever done wrong?

Frey ground his teeth, moved his lips several times, then looked up at the men.

No matter what he’d learned, it was better to extricate himself before he became more entangled in the original story’s events.

He could make a suitable excuse and tell them someone would soon arrive to repay Leo’s debt. Then, once Regulus came, Frey could dump the entire situation on him.

But…….

“I miss them……. I miss them so, so much…….”

At that moment, an image of Leo from the novel flashed before his eyes, weeping as he longed for his parents.

If Leo had met Frey before he met these people.

Then he would never have gone into debt, and his parents would have recovered quickly.

And if Frey ignored these men……. Someday, even more victims would end up weeping like Leo in the novel.

“Damn it…….”

It would’ve been better if he hadn’t known anything. No, it would’ve been better if he’d been shameless enough to know everything and still turn away.

Get a grip. Is this really the time to worry about other people’s problems?

Frey clenched his fist as though renewing his resolve.

He had to steel himself.

If he gave in here, it would be like deliberately stepping into the original plot and asking to get tangled up in it.

After making up his mind, Frey raised his head and looked at the creditors.

Then he spoke.

“……I’m curious about the person researching this treatment.”

“…….”

“Could I meet them?”

The words that left Frey’s mouth were the exact opposite of what he had decided.
