Crazy bastard.

Deranged bastard.

Lunatic bastard.

Frey cursed himself inwardly as he followed the large man.

What was the point of vowing not to become entangled with the original story?

Because the situation weighed on him, he couldn’t pretend not to know, and now he’d gone and done something this crazy.

‘God, why do I have to meddle in everything?’

Frey sighed deeply to himself, forced the corners of his mouth upward, and slowly followed the men.

Perhaps the expensive garment had made him look wealthy. The creditors behaved more politely than expected.

‘How did Leo get caught by idiots like these?’

In truth, the situation looked suspicious if he gave it any thought at all.

Someone in a rural village rather than the capital was supposedly receiving enormous investments to research Rosifer.

Someone had also supposedly recovered after taking medicine the researcher had smuggled out.

They were probably all baseless rumors.

‘……He must have been that desperate.’

Desperate enough that he couldn’t stop even though he knew the debt was growing beyond anything he could bear.

Frey swallowed his frustration and followed the creditors through several turns in a winding alley. At last, a rather imposing mansion appeared in a corner of the village.

“Consider yourself lucky. That researcher happens to be on leave for the rest of this week. Even we can’t meet him easily.”

“…….”

“And I don’t know what grand household you used to work for……. But you should be polite in front of the researcher. There are rumors he is a true noble.”

Frey understood half a beat late and let out a soft exclamation.

It seemed they had seen the Norbert crest embroidered on the nightclothes and assumed he was a servant of that house.

“Here. This is the place.”

The moment they entered the mansion, Frey noticed a banner hanging directly ahead. The emblem embroidered on it left him speechless.

“Wait just a moment.”

The emblem on the banner unquestionably belonged to House Rubellia.

‘I’m certain…….’

No one could use the emblem symbolizing a noble house unless they had a direct connection to it.

Impersonation was such a grave crime that it could cost someone their life.

Even those who knew about the impersonation and overlooked it were punished, so people did not casually copy noble crests.

‘House Rubellia is directly connected to these swindlers?’

The creditor who brought Frey here had said the Count was funding the researcher. He had boasted as if the researcher were secretly removing some of the medicine.

But that wasn’t the truth…….

Frey’s lips moved as a suspicion occurred to him.

They were falsely claiming that the people ‘Frey’ had healed recovered by taking the medicine, then using that lie to swindle commoners out of their money.

‘Surely not.’

Count Rubellia could not possibly be that insane.

“It has been a while since you visited.”

As Frey stared intently at the banner, an unfamiliar voice sounded from the top of the stairs.

“Ah, sir! I apologize for disturbing you. This man begged to meet you.”

“Me? Is he someone else who wants the medicine?”

“Ha ha ha. Yes. That is…… what happened. He appears to be connected to a fairly important household…….”

Frey continued staring at the banner as the two spoke, then turned toward the owner of the voice.

He drew a sharp breath without meaning to.

Faded gray hair and pale violet eyes similar to his own.

Even the boy’s build and bearing resembled Frey’s closely enough that they might be mistaken for brothers at a glance.

“An important household? Even so, people are waiting for the medicine. If you continue bringing people in like this…….”

“Ha ha, yes. Of course. But…… he seems connected to House Norbert.”

The boy who resembled Frey opened his eyes wide at the man’s obsequious words.

“The ducal house…….”

“……What should I do? Shall I send him away?”
