As though he could no longer hear anyone else, Isaac rose from his seat and drew a dagger.

“That insane bastard…….”

Then he headed toward the room where Frey had been confined.

While the two men spoke, Frey had already reached the stairs at the end of the corridor. With their voices behind him, he carefully descended.

“Hah, haah…….”

He didn’t know what Isaac would decide, but escaping came first.

“They weren’t kidding…… when they said running away from home meant nothing but misery……!”

Who could have known that “home” meant the ducal mansion?

Frey shook his head, then staggered violently as his knees buckled.

It was already the third time he had nearly fallen like this.

Whatever drug they used to make him sleep, the lingering effects still made his vision swim.

Frey moved as quickly and quietly as he could.

Then he threw open the mansion door.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

A rough hand seized Frey’s broken hand and flung him to the floor.

“Ah!”

He was yanked backward and fell so suddenly that, before he could reach out, his head struck the floor hard.

His already dizzy vision flashed white again and again.

“I was startled because I thought you had already escaped…….”

This insane bastard……!

Isaac pressed down on Frey’s shoulder as Frey clutched his head in pain. Then he straddled him in one movement and aimed the blade.

“I should’ve studied how to preserve corpses a little more……. If I keep you somewhere cold, will you decay more slowly? Or would it be better to drain all your blood at once……? I don’t intend to eat you before discovering whether you have divine power. Should I simply eat you anyway……?”

Isaac adjusted his grip on the dagger as he calmly uttered the gruesome words. The tip moved between Frey’s throat and chest.

Thud!

Frey struck Isaac’s jaw with his relatively uninjured hand.

“Ghk!”

Isaac hadn’t expected the sudden counterattack and reeled to the left. Frey used the opening to stand and run through the open door.

“N-no.”

Isaac rose unsteadily and pursued him.

The blow to Isaac’s jaw made him stagger, allowing Frey to barely maintain his lead.

“Where…… where can I……?”

Frey entered the garden and searched for somewhere to hide.

Running straight through the main gate would be fastest, but then he would have to run without stopping until he reached a crowded place.

He might manage if Isaac alone were pursuing him, but…….

“Find him now!”

At Isaac’s venomous shout, the creditors also flooded into the garden.

Frey hurriedly searched his surroundings, then hid among shrubs as tall as his body.

“This way. He came in here. He must be hiding. Find him now.”

One person stabbed through the large, overgrown plants with a long pole while another slowly circled the area, holding his breath.

Frey squeezed his eyes shut and held his breath.

Rustle.

Grass moved not far away.

“There! I heard something over there!”

The sound of people stampeding in the opposite direction receded, but the search continued for a long time. When they still failed to find Frey, Isaac finally shouted another stream of curses.

“I said find him now!”

Frey didn’t know how much time had passed.

Once he thought the area had fallen quiet, he cautiously slipped from the shrubs.

Biting his lip, Frey looked toward the nearest wall.

Both his hands and arms were injured, so he didn’t know whether he could climb it properly, but he couldn’t leave through the main gate.

‘Please, don’t come…….’

Frey grabbed the top of the wall with his less injured arm and set his toes against a protruding stone. Gritting his teeth, he pulled himself up with all his strength and brought one leg over the other side.

“You can’t leave. You have to die here.”

The chilling voice sounded behind him, and a sharp dagger flew toward his back.
