“What?”

“Well, enough. I understand roughly what you want. However……. I cannot break off the engagement.”

Frey’s eyes widened at Samuel’s completely unexpected reply. Samuel bent at the waist and slowly stroked Frey’s cheek.

“Because I do not wish to give you what you want.”

“What are you talking about……?”

“Consider it spite. Our relationship was shattered long ago, and seeing the two of you getting along so well is deeply irritating.”

Samuel looked at Frey with a smile, then slowly shifted his gaze to Regulus. Cold golden eyes and silver eyes collided in the air.

“……I see.”

Frey, unconcerned by the murderous current flowing between the two men, answered calmly and stood.

The moment he put his feet on the floor, his vision swam, and a wave of severe nausea and blinding pain struck him. Frey gritted his teeth and rose anyway.

“Then I’ll be returning now.”

“You intend to return in that condition?”

Frey lifted his head from the hand clutching it and looked at Samuel.

“Of course. I have to go. You said you have no intention of breaking off the engagement, so I need to prepare to receive you. You know how overbearing the Count…… no, my father is. Or perhaps you don’t?”

Frey shrugged and straightened his swaying body.

His body screamed at him, but he had to get out of this place somehow. Samuel had seen his condition and would not push for an immediate marriage. Frey intended to escape during that interval.

He took one step to pass Samuel, but the strength left his legs and his knees buckled.

“Ah.”

Frey desperately reached toward the bed to keep himself from falling. Samuel stepped forward first, seized him around the waist, and held him firmly upright.

Regulus reached out a moment too late and frowned, displaying his discomfort at Samuel’s action. Before he could say anything, however, Frey gently pushed Samuel away and steadied himself.

Samuel silently withdrew his hand at that instinctive rejection, then spoke in a lower voice.

“What do you intend to tell the Count when you return in this condition?”

“That I healed the former Duke.”

Samuel’s expression hardened at the plain reply. The fact that Frey meant to speak honestly rather than hide his pain meant…….

“Did the Count know that using your ability shortens your lifespan?”

Frey’s eyes darted aside at Samuel’s question. It did not actually shorten his lifespan, but……. Allowing that misunderstanding to remain would only help him.

“He probably does.”

“Then was that also why you didn’t wake for three months……?”

As Samuel’s face grew darker and darker, Frey pressed hard against his throbbing temple, wishing the man would simply let him leave…….

“Did the Count perhaps……?”

“Your Grace.”

“…….”

“Does that…… matter?”

Frey interrupted and looked quietly up at Samuel. Samuel’s fingertips trembled at the weakness in his voice.

“We’re going to be married soon, so I think I should know.”

“No. You don’t need to.”

“……What did you say?”

“It’s already in the past.”

Frey spoke firmly, then slowly walked past Samuel.

‘Don’t take an interest…….’

He didn’t think learning about his circumstances would make Samuel pity him. Even so, Frey intended to conceal as much about himself as possible.

That was simply how these things worked.

Once you learned that someone had led a pitiful life, you couldn’t help noticing them a little more.

‘I don’t need it, you bastard.’

Maybe if it were anyone else.

But Samuel’s interest was the one thing he could do without.

Of course it was.

The Norbert mansion was precisely where Frey had been murdered.
