Something’s Not Right About This Transmigration - Chapter 8.1
When Frey left the room and grabbed the railing, Regulus appeared right behind him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders.
‘Should I have stayed in bed instead of pretending to be strong……?’
But he could not possibly act as though nothing were wrong in that situation.
Since ‘Frey’s’ corpse had been discovered at the Norbert estate in the novel, he could not remove Samuel from his list of suspects.
‘You have to be wary of the first person you meet after transmigrating.’
Frey bit the tender flesh inside his mouth and looked up at Regulus.
In truth, Regulus was so kind that Frey wasn’t sure whether to suspect him at all……. But Regulus was also one of the suspects.
Didn’t they say that serious crimes were usually committed by someone the victim knew?
“Are you alright?”
Frey was about to gently push Regulus away and take a step when Regulus asked in a voice full of concern.
“What? Oh, if you mean my body, it’s as you can see……. I’m a little dizzy.”
Regulus’s expression turned peculiar at the answer.
Had he not asked if Frey’s body was alright?
When Frey tilted his head, Regulus said it was nothing and urged him onward.
“Young Lord Rubellia.”
Frey and Regulus were about to open the mansion door and leave when Samuel’s voice sounded behind them.
“If you’re returning to the Count’s mansion anyway, wouldn’t it be better to come with me?”
“……Pardon?”
“His Highness accompanying you doesn’t cancel our scheduled meeting today.”
Frey’s lips moved at Samuel’s words.
He had expected Samuel to postpone the appointment because Frey looked unwell. Instead, Samuel meant to visit as planned.
“That is true, but……. As you can see, I’m not in very good condition. I might collapse in the middle of our conversation. Are you sure that’s alright?”
“The Count and I have always handled the discussion. You only need to sit beside us, Young Lord. That’s what you always did.”
Frey pressed his lips into a line at the pointed reply.
“I will have a carriage prepared, so wait here. And there’s no one available to receive Your Highness at present, so perhaps you should visit again when you have time.”
Samuel turned his back while maintaining his polite manner to the end. Regulus watched him go and clicked his tongue softly.
“I was going to take you with me if possible……. What has gotten into that bastard?”
“What do you mean?”
“It seems he was being considerate of you in his own way.”
“Considerate?”
……How?
When Frey looked at him in confusion, Regulus led him to a nearby couch and carefully seated him.
“How much do you remember about the Count?”
“Uh……. That he forces me to heal people with my ability and hits me?”
Regulus shook his head as though that were nothing.
“Four years ago, you healed seven people afflicted with Rosifer.”
“…….”
“Immediately afterward, envoys came from a foreign country to find you.”
Regulus’s voice turned cold.
“At the time, you couldn’t take a single step out of bed because of the aftereffects. Yet they offered an enormous amount of gold in exchange for you treating their Rosifer patients.”
“…….”
“Do you know what the Count did?”
“……He forced me to heal them?”
“Yes. When you couldn’t regain consciousness, he slapped you and dragged you by the hair…….”
Regulus’s face contorted as though he could never forget what he witnessed that day. He bit his lip and suppressed his emotions for a moment before speaking again.
“Whatever his reasons, if the Duke had not visited the Count’s mansion today, the Count would have laid hands on you again and accused you of ruining the marriage.”
“Oh…….”
“The Duke doesn’t seem to know you’re being abused……. But he must have sensed that something was wrong.”
Frey tilted his head at the murmur.
“But how do you know about it, Your Highness?”
“Because you told me.”
“Oh…….”
“The two of us were probably much closer than you think.”
