The Saint Wants to Rest - Chapter 7.1
“Ah, really, ‘Jewel Vampire Bat.’ I wonder who came up with such a tacky name?”
The woman gripping a massive hammer spoke as she crushed a bat lunging toward her. Her name was Yu Na-bi. She was a member of Choi Jae-heon’s guild, Stigma, and held the position of Tanker.
“I know, right? It’s way too childish,” chattered the young man beside her, Kang Min-jae. He was a Buffer, capable of increasing speed and power by roughly 10%. Beside him was an older middle-aged man carrying a giant bow, Park Jong-seok. Among the guild members who entered the Jewel Mine today, he served as a Dealer alongside Choi Jae-heon.
“Being intuitive is best. Intuitive,” Park Jong-seok remarked. Usually, he had a gloomy personality, but today he was slightly more talkative than usual because he was paired with Yu Na-bi and Kang Min-jae, the younger and more energetic wing of the guild.
One normally shouldn’t chatter inside a Gate, but the reason they could do so today was entirely due to Choi Jae-heon, who was moving ahead of them. Whenever anything tried to pounce, he swept them away all by himself. Opportunities for the other three to step in were extremely rare.
The single Jewel Vampire Bat that had slipped through moments ago was the only action they’d seen. Still, the guild members didn’t complain. Everything had been discussed and agreed upon since the moment they joined Stigma.
When Choi Jae-heon was included in the party, the rest were to focus on inspecting the Gate rather than monster disposal. For that reason, Yu Na-bi handled the occasional monster that was missed.
Park Jong-seok performed escort duties beside the Buffer, Kang Min-jae. He was also conducting research on the Gate, so his pace slowed whenever he stopped to record information.
Under these circumstances, the only thing echoing through the cavern was the screaming of monsters dying at Choi Jae-heon’s hands.
Kill, kill, and kill again. Then, at a certain point, Choi Jae-heon felt a sense of abnormality. The undead, which had initially been scattered here and there before lunging at the sound of them, began to form ranks.
They were showing intelligent movement. In the past, a researcher had announced that monsters also feel fear. They fundamentally want to kill humans, but they also know how to back away when faced with a greater terror.
Yet, the monsters forming ranks did not retreat, even as they trembled with fear. It felt as if someone was forcibly pushing them to the front lines.
“Stop.”
At Choi Jae-heon’s voice, Yu Na-bi raised her hammer. Park Jong-seok remained alert, scanning the surroundings with his bow, while Kang Min-jae hid between them.
“The monsters’ behavior is strange.”
Even Kang Min-jae noticed it with just a quick glance.
“It really is weird.”
Yu Na-bi narrowed her eyes and glared at the monsters, when suddenly, they began to mill about in confusion. Simultaneously, a scream erupted from the dark passage visible behind the monsters.
“A-Aaaaagh! Cursed Regnasia! Why, why are you here?!”
“Save me! I don’t want to die like this!”
“You, you!”
An unpleasant voice, like fingernails scratching a chalkboard, let out a desperate shriek. However, the voice of the opponent who was reducing them to this state could not be heard. Following that, the monsters dashed forward as if trying to escape.
Kiiiieek! Kwek!
Choi Jae-heon snapped his fingers, activating his telekinesis.
Boom!
An intangible force slammed down onto the running monsters. Under the weight of the invisible mass, the monsters died without even being able to make a sound. This was a Gate they had entered by lowering its rank intentionally; there was no monster here capable of blocking Choi Jae-heon.
“Uh! Guild Leader!” Kang Min-jae shouted to Choi Jae-heon just then. “The Gate rank is rising!”
“What? The rank is rising?”
“Uh, it went up for a second and then came back down.”
Kang Min-jae shrank back as he subtly tucked away the Gate measurement device he was holding. A Gate’s rank does not fluctuate without a reason. This meant this Gate was different from others. Having dealt with the surging monsters, Choi Jae-heon stood still, waiting for something.
The sound of footsteps could be heard approaching through the now-silent passage. The sound was small and rhythmic.
Eventually, after some time passed, a tall man revealed himself. He had shimmering blonde hair and purple eyes, a rarity even among foreigners. It would be accurate to say he possessed a mysterious beauty that seemed to blend Eastern and Western features—even though his height, broad shoulders, and chest clearly marked him as a man.
“You filthy dregs of the Demon King!”
