“Your Highness, if you wait here a moment, I will fetch the carriage.”

With that flimsy excuse to escape, Leslun turned his body. But a hand stretched out in front of him, pressing against the wall, blocking his path.

Trapped with not even a finger’s breadth of space to move, Leslun swallowed dryly against his will.

There was no way through.

“Look honestly into your own heart. And then look at me.”

Kailos whispered with a subtlety that felt almost like hypnosis. As Leslun listened, he truly felt the strength leave his body.

“Even if I do that, nothing will change…”

He began to protest, lifting his head—only for his words to die as he found Kailos’s eyes so close to his own.

Startled, he turned his face away, but this time lips brushed against his earlobe. The warmth of that touch on such sensitive skin made Leslun’s eyes squeeze shut.

“It will change. Because I will reward you.”

There was laughter in Kailos’s voice. Unwittingly, Leslun turned his head toward him.

As their eyes locked and the world seemed to stop—lips met.

At first, a light touch. Then lips parted, the boundary crumbling. Lip against lip, thin skin pressing flush.

As Kailos tilted his head to adjust the angle, warmth and breath flowed deep within.

When his lower lip was gently drawn in, Leslun swallowed a faint moan he hadn’t meant to make. His lips trembled, and his chest swelled almost painfully.

They overlapped, pressed, biting into each other’s warmth in a back-and-forth of kisses.

When that long yet fleeting kiss ended, Leslun felt his mind grow distant from the shock of what had just happened.

“Look forward to it.”

The deep voice resonated by his ear, making his spine shiver.

“I’ll treat you well.”

Startled, Leslun sucked in a breath.

“Not just well—I’ll treat you so well that you’ll say there’s no one but me.”

“Your Highness, that…”

“You’ll cling to me, because it can’t be anyone else but me.”

His heart thudded hard in his chest.

Just now… had the Crown Prince… confessed to him?

The impact was so great he nearly forgot where he was standing.

Why was this happening? He could not understand. This wasn’t what he wanted.

Kailos was already a good man. But to say there could be no one else but him…

The Crown Prince teased him playfully, looked after him whenever he was hurt, even lent him a bed that carried his own scent.

Robin, his senior aide, was kind as well—but the feeling was different.

Among Imperial nobles, there were cases of men keeping male lovers, but it could hardly be called common. And before him stood not just anyone, but the Crown Prince himself.

Such a confession could not be easily accepted. Perhaps “overwhelming” was the word.

It was not natural in the least, and yet, it was as though someone whispered inside his head, reassuring him that it was fine.

That he should follow wherever his heart led, that it was the path toward his new fate.

“You felt it too, didn’t you? That something happened between us then.”

At Kailos’s question, tinged with a faint smile, Leslun could not bring himself to deny it. Could he mean… that moment at the Academy, when they had nearly kissed…?

“I don’t know what you mean, Your Highness.”

He tried to wriggle free, but Kailos laughed as though the idea were absurd.

“That day, Blue played a trick on us both.”

“What sort of trick…?”

“Mischief.”

After all, that creature was the guardian beast entrusted with the Empire’s future.

And then, a brief silence.

As Leslun’s reason gradually returned, his head spun wildly. At last, his quick mind leapt to a single hypothesis.

His face flared crimson with embarrassment.

“It was… because of Blue?”

But it wasn’t truly a question for Kailos—it was closer to Leslun asking himself.

And Kailos, knowing this, only waited calmly for his reaction.

Leslun could not deny the words.

“Be honest—what was it that creature stirred within you?”
