Bam! Crash!

“…Huff…!”

I kicked the leg of the desk Kwon Jayoon was sprawled across and knocked it off balance.

“Good thing the floor’s slippery.”

The desk and people tumbled noisily from the impact, and the axe slipped from the executioner’s hand, spun once through the air, then fell with a clear, bell-like clang.

“Jayoon-ah, let’s get out of here first.”

“W-What?!”

“Running is the foundation of survival.”

Without hesitation, I grabbed the flustered bastard by the arm, hauled him up, and blindly ran out of the classroom.

I didn’t know where we were supposed to go, so I headed down the stairs first.

Tak tak tak-.

“Baek Hanrim, what the hell are those guys? Are you in on this too?!”

“That’s pretty harsh to say to the person who saved you.”

Tak tak tak-.

We went down the stairs, then kept going down. Whenever a corner appeared, we turned, circling over and over as we kept moving and prayed for the familiar yet unfamiliar staircase to finally end.

Tak tak….

“…What the hell…. This is weird…! Let go of me…!”

At first, he had been too flustered to do anything but follow wherever I led him. As time passed, he regained his senses, shook off my hand, and pressed himself tightly against the wall in wary caution.

“Are we actually going down the stairs? It feels like we’re going up.”

Now that he said it, I realized we had only been moving in one direction on the staircase without actually registering whether we were going up or down.

This wasn’t a genre where you could innocently believe that if you kept moving in the same direction, you would eventually reach the first floor.

“But we’ve been going down this whole time, haven’t we?”

“I don’t know! Look at the direction we’re facing right now! We’re going up!”

“A staircase that goes up even when you’re going down….”

“Move, fuck!”

Tap!

I silently rested a hand against my chin and sank into deep thought. Kwon Jayoon seized the opportunity to quickly pull away from the wall and sprint down the stairs toward the floor below.

Tak tak tak-.

“Huh?!”

“Hm?”

Then he appeared on the floor directly above me.

“What the fuck is this…! I’m going insane!”

Tak tak tak-.

“Again?! Why do I keep coming back to the same place?!”

The same thing repeated over and over. Kwon Jayoon would run down the stairs with pounding footsteps, only to emerge from the floor above.

“Aaagh!”

Bang bang bang!

Kwon Jayoon screamed and slammed his fists and feet against the wall, even throwing his body into it. Seeing the violent behavior that only emerged under extreme circumstances made it sink in that this really was the same Mafia Purple from back then.

“I think this might be a Penrose staircase.”

A Penrose staircase.

A staircase created by a geometrical illusion that cannot exist under the three-dimensional laws of physics. An infinite staircase that cannot exist in reality.

“Penrose? The triangle?”

“Yeah, it’s like the punishment of Sisyphus. It goes on forever.”

“Why the fuck are you so calm about this! Did you drag me in here?!”

Strictly speaking, he was right. If it weren’t for me, this bastard wouldn’t have had any reason to come here either. But there was no need to tell him that honestly, was there?

“Jayoon, you have quite the imagination.”

“Aaagh! Let me out!”

Bang bang!

He slammed his fists against the wall again.

“Wait, was that always on the wall?”

As I watched him, I suddenly noticed that the poster attached to the wall looked slightly different from the posters I normally saw around school.

Kwon Jayoon had been moving around in a frenzy, but my words seemed to return a little reason to him. He stopped punching the wall and looked at the poster.

〈 Pedestrian Safety Rules for Using the Stairs 〉

1- Do not run on the stairs.
—The moment your heart rate exceeds a certain threshold, the number of floors will multiply infinitely.

2- Be sure to hold the handrail while moving.
—If you do not hold the handrail and proceed in the designated direction, you will deviate from the physical laws of this world.

3- Do not walk with your hands in your pockets.
—If you have put your hand inside a pocket, remove it immediately and check the number of fingers and the position of your palm. If you confirm that something does not belong to you, use a sharp object to isolate the affected area.

4- Follow the proper order and keep to the right.
—The moment you ignore this warning and bump shoulders with them, you will deviate from your universe and become lost. Do not mistake the space for being empty.

5- Do not allow children to play near the stairs.
—There are no children here. The moment you encounter a child, leave the area immediately.
