Why am I always like this?

I should just hurry up and die. Forget piling up money and setting it on fire. I should just pour gasoline over myself.

“I’ll pay you by the hour. Two million won an hour.”

Wow, crazy. Crazy bastard. Fucking lunatic. Why does he have so much money too? I wondered if I had died and was being bewitched by something.

Baek Hanrim’s supple fair fingers, and the bundles of bills swimming back and forth between them. The kids called him Saint B. Is he actually a bodhisattva? A golden Buddha statue?

“Now you feel like listening to me, right?”

Disgusting, lovable money. When I don’t have it, I want to tear it to pieces, and when I have it in my hands, I never want to let go. Am I being mocked right now, or am I being tamed by you?

My head is blank. He took control away from me, but once money was placed in my hand, I wasn’t even angry. My shame went numb, and reality moved two steps farther away.

“Jayoon-ah, what are you going to do once you get the money?”

Baek Hanrim called my name in that soft, ticklish way as we climbed the stairs to escape the monster.

This guy keeps dropping my surname and calling me by my first name, and his tone is so gentle I can’t stand it. The fact that it’s Baek Hanrim makes me even crazier. He doesn’t even know what he’s doing. Seeing how he treats Kim Jihwan, who he says he’s close with, you’d think this bastard gave birth to him himself.

In this insane, unreal situation, the most unreal thing of all is Baek Hanrim, smiling with his eyes curved into crescents as he leads me along like he’s used to all this.

“Everyone says it was you. Was it really you?”

Baek Hanrim asked after closing the rooftop door and turning to face me.

If I had an axe in my hand like that fucking bastard earlier, I would’ve buried it without hesitation in the heads of the owner of those shoes who treated me like a thief and the bastard who slammed me onto a desk and beat the shit out of me without mercy. If someone makes me feel like shit for no reason, I want to create a reason and get revenge on them anyway. That’s the kind of bastard I am. I can’t do something like endure it patiently the way Baek Hanrim does.

“Make the choice that puts you in a better position. Stay calm.”

I can’t do things that make people hope like you can.

“Show your sincerity to someone who’s willing to listen.”

Please don’t make me afraid of disappointing you.

“Tell me, Jayoon-ah.”

Don’t look at me like that….

After closing the rooftop door, I asked Kwon Jayoon.

I was someone willing to listen to him, so I told him to show me his sincerity.

Kwon Jayoon froze for a long time after hearing me before finally managing to speak.

“I… didn’t steal them.”

Kwon Jayoon’s voice trembled as he claimed his innocence. It sounded so awkward and clumsy that anyone listening might have thought he was lying. But the way his entire body had stiffened with tension felt like the truth to me.

“I see.”

From now on, Kwon Jayoon wasn’t the culprit in my mind.

That was what I decided.

“Then, if you were the real culprit, what do you think you would’ve done?”

I spoke while looking at Kwon Jayoon, who was sweating coldly from nerves.

“You believe me?”

“I’m going to try.”

Of course, only for this life.

If Kwon Jayoon’s lie ended up killing me, this trust would break. I hoped that wouldn’t happen.

“If I were the real culprit… I would’ve thrown them out the window. The sneakers.”

Kwon Jayoon answered my question about what he would’ve done if he were the culprit.

Throw them out the window… Why?

“Wouldn’t you need to sell the sneakers? They’d get damaged if you threw them.”

“They’ve already been worn, and stolen goods sell for jack shit anyway. They wouldn’t get damaged badly enough to become unsellable just from being thrown. The landscaping around our school is soft too.”

My ears perked up at the reliable yet unhealthy information being provided by a budding future criminal. Come to think of it, once something had been stolen, selling it for full price was already impossible.

“Then does that mean they’re not inside the classroom?”

“Even a fucking dog knows to bury a bone when you give it one. Even if they were, the culprit would’ve hidden them.”

If finding the shoes immediately and proving his innocence was impossible, then we had to identify the culprit.

“They said the thief disappeared in an instant. Like you said, you could throw the shoes somewhere and hide them, but what about the person?”

“They could do it if they got the fuck out really fast.”

“Yeah, but if someone moved that fast, they would’ve been caught. It’d look weird if someone suddenly started running.”

I had mentioned the possibility that the culprit might not be inside the classroom, but honestly, I still thought they probably were.
