“Jihwan, is there anything you want?”

Cha Gwonhyeok, who had been listening to the conversation, asked Kim Jihwan. Kim Jihwan answered without even thinking about it.

“Buy me stocks. U.S. ones.”

“Okay.”

Without any hesitation, Cha Gwonhyeok opened a stock app right there and gifted Kim Jihwan a few shares.

“Happy birthday.”

“Yeah.”

I felt a little deflated by how incredibly simply the birthday congratulations ended.

“If you give it to him now, what are you going to give him on his birthday-.”

“Am I going too?”

“Duh.”

The main top doesn’t celebrate the bottom’s birthday? That’s seriously unforgivable. It’s as bad as making the bottom go hungry. There’s hardly anything more miserable than eating alone on your birthday.

“Don’t make this into a bigger thing, Baek Hanrim.”

“How could I celebrate your birthday and leave Gwonhyeok out?”

Wasn’t there a children’s song that went something like, on the birthday of the tiger, the great hero of the mountains, all sorts of animals gathered in the park and held a ball? Kim Jihwan the tiger, Cha Gwonhyeok the dancing rabbit, and me, the fox playing the violin. All the members of the children’s song with its three animals were assembled.

“Have you decided on a place?”

Cha Gwonhyeok asked, and I answered that I hadn’t yet.

“Then let’s do it at my house. Everywhere will be crowded on Suneung day.”

Cha Gwonhyeok offered up his spacious, clean house. The location for Kim Jihwan’s birthday party was immediately decided.

This year’s location was Cha Gwonhyeok’s house, and there would be three of us.

It seemed like it would be a fun time.

The day of the Suneung.

I had gotten up early in the morning and was frying an egg. All to make my soul food, soy sauce egg rice.

Inside the refrigerator was a custom lettering cake I had specially ordered for Kim Jihwan. This time, I had gotten a kitschy yet vintage-style cake so he wouldn’t brutally butcher it again. It had a milky sky-blue base, with white and pale-yellow frosting circling the edges like lace, and ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ written in the center. It was a cute cake that looked almost like a decorative prop.

“This is the first time someone else has joined us for one of our birthdays.”

Kim Jihwan and I had taken care of each other’s birthdays for a long time.

Kim Jihwan usually tossed me a present without a word or brought me along to dinner with his family, while I usually celebrated with a cake and a letter. That was why Kim Jihwan’s parents didn’t buy a cake for dinner on Kim Jihwan’s birthday. I always brought one.

“Will there be no place for me once we become adults?”

Ding!

Love Kim Jihwan.

“Huh?”

Just as I was imagining Kim Jihwan and Cha Gwonhyeok as adults, a strange status window appeared along with the sound effect that played when you picked up a coin in a game. This damn world inside a novel really found all kinds of ways to torment me. What was it this time? There were minigames, daily quests, and now there was another element too?

Keyword Draw

Please turn the lever of the draw machine and draw a keyword.

Would you like to turn the lever?

Yes / No

“A draw…? Is this gacha?”

Along with the text in the system window, I saw an image of the kind of capsule machine I had only ever seen in gacha shops.

There was no way the system would give me something for no reason. This definitely didn’t feel like a reward. It seemed like it was going to drag in another bizarre world setting or start some ridiculous game again….

Should I just hit ‘No’ this time?

“What am I hesitating for.”

Yes

I had never run away from anything the system threw at me. Even if it put me through hell, I would experience it firsthand, figure out its loopholes or rules, and find a way to use them to my advantage. I wasn’t going to just sit there and take it.

Rattle, rattle-.

Drrrrrrk… tok.

Capsule (1)

As soon as I pressed ‘Yes,’ I heard that clear Ding! sound from picking up a coin in a game again, and a physical capsule dropped at my feet.

“There’s a piece of paper inside. Should I open it?”

Keyword: Younger Top

The keyword will be cleared when Kim Jihwan feels love.

“Right, it did say Keyword Draw. But Younger Top….”

For an instant, everything in front of me lurched violently, and I felt my field of vision gradually sinking toward the floor. Thinking the system might be pulling another trick and making me pass out or something, I first turned off the heat under the frying pan where I had been cooking the egg. Then I saw the hand touching the induction cooktop and freaked out.

“What is this…?”

My hand had gotten smaller.

Like a seven-year-old’s.

“I’m way too young….”
