“I heard you’ve been worrying a lot about romance.”

“Ah, the thing Hanrim said he’d help me with?”

“Yeah. Hyung, you’re seriously impressive. Not everyone can keep trying without giving up.”

“No, I’m not doing anything special-. Hahaha.”

Hyeonjin-hyung had approached me saying he knew Jihyeok-hyung, but Jihyeok-hyung actually didn’t know Hyeonjin-hyung at all.

He had clearly said that he liked him and was planning to confess, yet he had never even properly spoken to Jihyeok-hyung.

“So, has it been going well lately?”

“Huh?”

“The confession. You kept coming to Hanrim every lunchtime to talk about it.”

Why had Goo Hyeonjin come talk to me every lunchtime?

More importantly, why had he approached me using Jihyeok-hyung as an excuse in the first place?

“Ah… I’ve been trying….”

“Really? How did you end up liking him?”

“Just… he caught my eye at the entrance ceremony. So….”

“Wow.”

I observed Goo Hyeonjin as he talked with Cha Gwonhyeok.

Goo Hyeonjin kept glancing somewhere else even while talking. He was also wearing sneakers inside the school instead of indoor shoes.

Looking at the footprints left in the dirt of the school field, the shoes matched the footprints I had seen when I explored the school late at night a long time ago.

“You met at the entrance ceremony. That sounds like fate, even the way you met.”

“Fate… Yeah, maybe it is fate. I knew the moment I saw him.”

Goo Hyeonjin scratched the back of his head and habitually glanced sideways at Kim Jihwan.

He stared so openly it was rude, while Kim Jihwan remained defenseless, absorbed in looking at stock charts.

Cha Gwonhyeok was observing Goo Hyeonjin just like I was.

After seeming to think for a moment, he spoke.

“When you like someone, you want to know everything about them.”

At Cha Gwonhyeok’s words, Goo Hyeonjin stopped glancing sideways.

Then he looked at Cha Gwonhyeok.

“Right? You want to know them, and you want to have them. You want them to be yours.”

“Y-Yeah…! Right, are you like that too? I’m exactly that type.”

“Yeah, I’m like that too. I don’t want to share.”

“Ah! I know exactly what you mean…! Wow, there aren’t many people who understand this.”

With a gentle tone, Cha Gwonhyeok drew out sympathy and goodwill from the other person.

The process felt less like a conversation and more like a procedure for completely dissecting the person named Goo Hyeonjin.

An intruder pretending to understand him.

“I seriously… can’t stand how badly I want to have them. I want them so much that I won’t feel satisfied until I have them. No matter what it takes, even if I have to steal….”

“You must really love them.”

“Yeah, it’s because I love them…. All of this is because I love them….”

“Hahaha.”

Cha Gwonhyeok covered his mouth as he laughed. He looked amused, but his eyes looked bored.

I could tell from watching him.

“Hyung, you’re seriously an impressive person. Tell me more.”

When I had asked Cha Gwonhyeok how he had planned to teach Byeongjun a lesson, Cha Gwonhyeok had simply answered that he would treat him kindly.

He would build a friendship with him, become someone with whom he shared his most private emotions, and wait until the other person revealed everything about himself.

That was when he would be the least guarded.

“Right, I see.”

When the other person exposed their most vulnerable parts, when they had become completely dependent on him psychologically.

Cha Gwonhyeok said that was when he would ask.

“You look like you have a lot to talk about.”

Whether there was anything they couldn’t tell other people. If they had anything troubling them, he would gladly listen.

If things reached that stage, the person psychologically dependent on him would no longer distinguish between what they should and shouldn’t say, and would freely spill their secrets.

Even if that secret happened to be stealing a school uniform and smearing their own bodily fluids onto a gym uniform.

Because most people who had done something wrong they couldn’t tell others about were terrified of being discovered while simultaneously being unable to resist the urge to tell someone.

“Let’s talk about the rest over messages. We don’t have each other’s numbers yet, right?”

Cha Gwonhyeok obtained Goo Hyeonjin’s number as naturally as breathing.

I couldn’t clearly confirm whether they contacted each other afterward.

What was certain was that Goo Hyeonjin appeared in front of me a few more times, then vanished without a trace.

After that, Kim Jihwan and Kim Jihwan’s parents occasionally received calls from the police station.

Kim Jihwan told me not to worry about it and didn’t explain the details.

But I could tell instinctively.

Cha Gwonhyeok must’ve completely gotten Goo Hyeonjin in the palm of his hand.

November 5 was Kim Jihwan’s birthday.

At the same time, it was also the day of the Suneung.

School was closed, and if your friend’s birthday happened to fall on a day off, what else were you supposed to do?

Of course you had to celebrate it.

“Jihwan-ah, you kept your birthday free, right?”

Since it was the day of the Suneung, even the academy Kim Jihwan attended was closed.

I had already prepared a birthday cake in advance for the birthday party that had been just the two of us for the past several years.

“If you make another cake with my face on it like last time, I’m going to smash the whole thing.”

Kim Jihwan ground his teeth and eyed the cake I had prepared warily.

“You really are going smash it, huh….”

“Yeah, I’m not bluffing.”

Last year, I had made a lettering cake using the best-looking selfie I had taken with Kim Jihwan after putting a lot of thought into it, and the bastard had punched his own face right through it.

Putting aside the weirdness of eating his own face, he had smashed the whole thing to pieces with his fist.

If you went through the trouble of being born with such a pretty face, you should at least make some use of it. It felt like such a waste that it was killing me.

(T/N: Suneung – The very crucial standardized college entrance exam in Korea; is an intense 8-hour exam marathon.)
