Wrong Genre! - Chapter 16.1
Rueg twisted his body and spoke in a small, shrinking voice. It was a problem that his true identity had been discovered, but now that Mason knew he wasn’t Versha, Rueg hoped he might let him go.
He allowed himself a moment of hope, but instead of looking taken aback, Mason let out a pleased laugh.
“There’s no way Versha Verdic was a man… So, you’re that Rueg Verdic I’d only heard rumors about?”
Mason grabbed Rueg’s chin hard.
Rueg’s cheek, already starting to swell from the earlier slap, throbbed with pain. Mason’s grip was so strong it felt like his bones would shatter, and tears welled up in Rueg’s eyes.
“Well, what do you know. An even more valuable catch has dropped right in front of me. If you’re a guy, it’s even better for me.”
Letting out a filthy laugh, Mason roughly flipped Rueg over. There was a metallic clinking sound as he started unfastening something behind Rueg’s back.
“W-What are you… What are you trying to do?!”
Terrified, Rueg writhed and struggled, but with Mason sitting on his back, he could barely move.
“N-No, stop. Stop, I said!”
As Rueg desperately thrashed and flailed his hands, his fingernails accidentally scratched Mason’s arm, drawing a curse from him.
“Fucking bastard, stay still!”
Mason’s large, toad-like hand struck Rueg’s head again. The heavy blow left Rueg’s body limp, and Mason hauled him up by the collar.
He had to move.
He needed to get up and bite Mason’s arm and run, or scream and draw people’s attention.
No matter how he struggled or screamed, Mason’s solid, heavy body didn’t budge in the slightest.
“See? If you’d just behaved from the start, none of this would have happened. Now there’s a mark on my good merchandise.”
Mason sneered at Rueg, who now hung limp and helpless. Seeing Rueg would no longer resist, he loosened his grip.
“Unfair, isn’t it? Not even knowing why you’re getting beaten up like this, or why something so terrifying is happening to you.”
“……”
“Think of it as the price for having the wrong family.”
A nasty chuckle.
Mason’s voice was laced with open mockery directed at Versha.
“No…”
Face pressed into the dirt, Rueg bit his lip.
The Versha from the original story was certainly a bad person.
But the Versha Rueg had met since arriving here wasn’t someone who would betray others for no reason. The rumors had been wrong all along.
“Don’t try to deny it. Still don’t get what’s going on, do you…? Versha Verdic betrayed ‘Our’ Highness.”
“……”
“Not that you need to know. You’ll figure out soon enough, crying under me, that Versha Verdic was the villain all along.”
With that disgusting laugh, Mason roughly tore Rueg’s shirt open. Watching his clothes be ripped apart, Rueg clenched his fists tightly.
He couldn’t just let it end like this.
Versha had said so: If you’re ever so scared you feel like you could die, you should be ready to die and fight back. Even if you die, at least it won’t be so unfair.
“Get—”
Rueg glared up at Mason, ready to punch him in the side—
“What do you think you’re doing?”
A voice, cold as ice, cut through the scene.
Rueg looked toward the source of the voice, and there stood someone with long, shining silver hair.
“Yuri…! Run, it’s dangerous…!”
Rueg cried out desperately, afraid Mason might drag Yuri into this too.
“……”
But Yuri only glanced briefly at Rueg, then drew the sword and leveled it at Mason.
The blade glinted dangerously, and Mason sucked in a sharp breath.
“Hey, Sir Everton, you’re pointing your sword at the wrong person.”
“I’m not so sure. To me, the victim and the perpetrator are perfectly clear.”
“…What?”
“Don’t move.”
The blade flashed threateningly, as if promising to cut down Mason if he so much as twitched.
At Yuri’s resolute tone, Mason’s face twisted in anger.
“You’d better choose carefully, Yuri Everton. You know that with one word from me, you could be summoned to the Duke.”
