With that resolve, Felix’s steps grew faster and faster. There was no way William, who had just lost his senses in a fit, could have already started looking for Rueg.

And yet, the moment Rueg was not in front of him, a maddening sense of anxiety surged up.

“Rueg.”

Almost running, Felix returned to the Crown Prince’s palace and headed straight for the office.

And when he flung the door open—

Only the documents Rueg had been working on remained inside. Rueg himself was nowhere to be seen.

“…Rueg?”

Where did he go?

Was there even anywhere Rueg would go inside the imperial palace?

To begin with, Rueg was not the type to leave his post during working hours.

“Don’t tell me…”

Could he really have been taken in that short amount of time?

Overcome by rising anxiety, Felix rushed out of the office and questioned the knight on duty.

“Verdic. Where is Verdic!”

Startled by the urgency in his voice, the knight widened his eyes and answered,

“Ah, he ran outside after hearing a strange sound. He was shouting ‘Yuri’ as he went…”

“Yuri? Do you mean Yuri Everton?”

“I could not look closely since I had to remain at my post, but I believe so.”

At the knight’s words, Felix’s expression hardened.

“His Highness definitely knows he’s handsome. I’m sure of it.”

Flip.

“If not, would he be smiling like that all the time and giving those deadly eye-smiles?”

Flip, flip.

“He’s seriously dangerous. …Ah, wait, is it inappropriate to say something like that about the Crown Prince?”

They say work goes faster if you complain about your boss while doing it. True enough, the paperwork began moving along quickly, and before long, Rueg had fallen silent, working with only his hands.

“Ugh…”

From somewhere not far away, he heard someone struggling.

“Hm?”

At the strange sound, Rueg lifted his head and looked around. But there was no one else in the office besides him.

“Did I hear wrong…”

Just as he tilted his head and tried to focus on his work again—

“Uuugh…!”

A groan came again, like someone trying to endure pain.

Feeling uneasy, Rueg set his pen down and looked around, then walked to the door and pressed his ear against it.

But outside, he could only hear the sounds of people passing through the corridor. There was no voice of anyone in distress or pain.

“I definitely heard something…”

“Ugh… aagh…!”

As if answering his confusion, the voice carried faintly on the wind, and Rueg instinctively turned toward the window.

When he walked over and looked outside, he saw someone collapsed in the bushes behind the office.

Silver hair glittered under the sunlight. He couldn’t see clearly, but there was only one person he knew with hair that long and beautiful.

Narrowing his eyes to look more closely, Rueg spotted the long sword Yuri always carried.

“…Yuri?”

Why has she collapsed there?!

Startled, Rueg immediately turned to leave the office. But the moment he grabbed the doorknob, his body stiffened.

‘O-Outside…’

Should he go out?

What if Mason, holding a grudge against him, was lurking nearby, waiting for him to come out?

Felix had probably captured and dealt with him, but he still hadn’t heard what had happened.

What if he had escaped from prison? What if he went out and something like that happened again…?

As fear surged over him like a tide, Yuri’s groan came once more.

“I have to go…”

Yuri had saved him once from Mason. She had even drawn her sword and driven him away. She must have been afraid too.

“If I pretend I didn’t see this… then I’d really be a terrible person.”

It was fine if he was a coward. But he didn’t want to be someone who forgot a kindness.

Swallowing dryly, Rueg gripped the doorknob tightly. His heart pounded so hard from tension that it felt like it might burst out of his chest.

“…It’s okay. It’ll be okay.”

Nothing will happen.

Repeating that to himself as if to reassure himself, Rueg threw the door open.

Squeezing his eyes shut, he rushed out of the office, ran down the stairs three at a time, and exited the building.

When he hurried to the back where he had seen earlier, Yuri was indeed there, collapsed in the bushes, unable to support herself.

“Y-Yuri! Are you okay? …Yuri!”
