Rueg could not hide his confused expression.

‘…What was that just now?’

The moment he crossed the clearing, he had clearly heard children laughing.

Yet there was no trace of laughter on the faces of the children beside him. The fleeting voices he had heard were the sound of more than a dozen children laughing.

Even stranger…

‘It feels like I’ve been here before.’

If he crossed this clearing and continued uphill, there should be an orphanage where the children all lived together. And if he went down that way, there would be a sewer, and if he went there…

“Do those men still come and loaf around near the sewer these days?”

As though possessed by something, Rueg murmured the question.

The eyes of the children gathered in small groups widened. Surprise flickered through the gazes that had been watching an outsider, and soon, one of the children nodded.

“How did you know? Yesterday, they threw stones at us and told us not to come down this way!”

“There’s a nice man who sometimes gives us the bread he was eating… but he hasn’t been giving us much lately. He says he doesn’t even have enough for himself.”

At the children’s murmuring, Rueg unconsciously swallowed dryly.

‘How do I know this…?’

It felt as natural as walking along the road in front of his own house. Considering how vivid it was, this memory was clearly inside his mind.

But…

‘I’ve never been here before.’

He had definitely experienced something like this before.

The imperial palace had also felt strangely familiar despite it being his first time there. He had even found the exact location of the office, though Versha had never told him where it was.

Back then, he had simply brushed it aside, thinking it might be some perk of transmigration…

Now that he thought about it, it did not seem like a perk.

If it really were, he would not have gotten lost in every other place he had stayed until now.

‘Then are these the real ‘Rueg’s’ memories? Has ‘Rueg’ been to the imperial palace and this place before?’

If it was before Rueg had entered this body, then ‘Rueg’ would have been under ten years old. The imperial palace was one thing, but this place seemed far too dangerous for a young child to visit…

“Verdic?”

“Yes?”

“Are you feeling unwell?”

At Yuri’s question, Rueg let out a brief exclamation and looked around.

Perhaps because he had suddenly stopped walking with a blank expression, both Yuri and the children were looking at Rueg with puzzled faces.

“…Ah, no. It’s nothing. Alright, shall we go?”

Rueg smiled brightly and began walking with the children.

As they entered deeper into the winding alley, more children’s voices could be heard from nearby.

“Grandma!”

“The supplies are here, the supplies!”

Watching the children rush toward one place in a crowd, Rueg slowly looked around.

‘…It really is familiar.’

It was clearly his first time here, yet it felt familiar, as though he had seen it somewhere before.

“Oh dear, don’t run. You’ll fall again like that.”

The moment he heard the voice, Rueg unconsciously turned toward it.

At the same time, a sharp ringing filled his ears, and a person’s voice mixed into the noise.

“Careful, it would be terrible if you fell. Please don’t run…!”

The phrasing was slightly more polite than the words he had just heard. That voice also felt strangely familiar, as though he had heard it somewhere before.

Rueg furrowed his brow at the ringing that felt as if it would tear his ears apart. A moment later, the noise stopped, and when Rueg lifted his head, his gaze met the other person’s.

At that instant, more than a dozen scenes began flashing before Rueg’s eyes, accompanied by a surging headache.

A tiny palm like a maple leaf. And a wrinkled hand holding it.

The old woman smiled at ‘Rueg’ and handed him a piece of dry bread, and ‘Rueg’ held it in his hand and smiled innocently.

And there were far more than one or two memories like that.

The small child ran around laughing brightly with children his own age, and he even fell asleep beneath a worn-out blanket as though this shabby, dilapidated house were his own home.

At the vivid memories, Rueg unconsciously let out a brief exclamation.

‘These are…’

He was certain.

These were the real ‘Rueg’s’ memories.
