These memories had not surfaced even once during the ten years since he entered this body.

Otherwise, there was no reason for the voice of someone he had never heard or a road he had never visited to feel so familiar.

But it was strange.

As far as Rueg knew, this was a place where even the most marginalized commoners lived.

It was a place rife with all kinds of brutal crimes, where most of the children had no guardians to protect them. A place where kindness was repaid with malice, and the only thing granted to the weak was death.

That was the place where Rueg now stood.

And.

‘Rueg Verdic is…’

He was definitely a noble, though?

‘I vaguely knew that he had been an active child, but…’

When Rueg had first entered this world, Schumann had once dabbed his tears with a handkerchief after seeing that Rueg refused to leave the estate.

“Young Master Rueg, who loved going outside to play so much, has not gone out for an entire month now… This Schumann’s worry knows no bounds.”

Could ‘Rueg’ have come all the way here to play?

A child under ten might not understand what was dangerous, so perhaps it was possible.

But…

‘Judging from the memories that surfaced, it seems like he even slept here.’

Would the servants of House Verdic, including Versha, really have allowed that?

Just as various questions threatened to fill his mind, Yuri strode over and tapped Rueg on the shoulder.

“Verdic. There are still more supplies to move.”

“Pardon? …A-Ah! Yes, I’m sorry. I had something to think about for a moment. We can leave the supplies here, correct?”

Rueg spoke with a smile to the person the children had called ‘Grandma.’ She smiled awkwardly and nodded.

For now, he should focus on the work he had to do.

“Haa…”

Rueg sat slumped in the chair as though he had half-melted into it and let out an exhausted breath.

After spending the entire day running around the clearing and playing hide-and-seek, Rueg forced his heavy eyelids open. Perhaps because it had been so long since he had run around and played, it was utterly exhausting.

“Thank you for playing with the children. You must be very tired, aren’t you?”

While Rueg was staring blankly into space, Maria, the orphanage director who had returned after gathering the laundry from outside, spoke.

Rueg, who had been dozing off, flinched violently in surprise and cleared his throat.

“Ah, ahem, ahem. No, I’m perfectly fine!”

At Rueg’s attempt to act composed, Maria covered her mouth and laughed.

She slowly approached, sat across from Rueg, and began folding the laundry she had gathered. Rueg naturally took some of the laundry and helped her.

“……”

Glancing up, Maria quietly watched Rueg fold the laundry.

Though she had not shown him how, he was folding it in exactly the same way Maria did.

“It seems you still haven’t forgotten.”

At Maria’s voice, Rueg lifted his head and looked at her. However, he merely tilted his head to the side, his expression showing that he did not understand what she meant.

“Do you still sleep better at night when you have something heavy pressing down on your body?”

“Pardon…?”

“And when you wake up in the middle of the night, you still have to drink warm water?”

With each word that left Maria’s mouth, Rueg’s face gradually stiffened.

As his hands slowed while folding the laundry at her words, which revealed that she knew every one of his habits, Maria spoke with a warm smile.

“I’m still glad to see that you seem to be doing well. You’re even wearing the poet shirts you used to avoid because you hated their scratchy lining.”

“……”

“As I recall, Miss Versha was the aide… What brings Young Master Rueg all the way here?”

At the slowly but clearly spoken question, Rueg’s face turned deathly pale.

Who in the world was this person?

Who was she, to know even things like this?

When Rueg abruptly rose from his seat and revealed his wariness, Maria widened her eyes in surprise.

“Ah, my… It seems a great deal of time truly has passed. To think that Young Master no longer remembers my face.”

“…You know me?”

“Of course I do. It has been a long time, Young Master. It’s me, Maria.”

“…Maria?”

…Who is that?
