Everyone’s eyes turned toward the source of the voice.

The healer-type Awakened I’d seen yesterday was entering through the open door.

“Eston, what brings you here…?”

“What do you think? I’m here to treat our honored lady.”

The woman glanced at me with a quick signal.

The butler seemed even more surprised than I was and pressed her,

“Treat her? Didn’t you say she was fine yesterday?”

“Yes. But the Young Master insisted.”

“What…?”

“He said I should do whatever I can to help Her Ladyship recover her memory quickly. Not sure what more I’m supposed to do, but.”

She shrugged as if she’d been wronged, her expression showing clear hostility.

‘She must really dislike Edith.’

No wonder she was so oddly prickly yesterday, too.

‘Isn’t she being a bit too obvious, just because I lost my memory?’

Judging by how she couldn’t hide her emotions, she didn’t seem very old. Maybe about Nancy’s age. Eighteen?

Maybe she hadn’t been Awakened for long and thought the world was easy.

If the real Edith were here, she would have caused a scene by now, I thought, clicking my tongue. Just then, Eston approached me.

“You know how it works from yesterday, right? I’ll need to do it again, Young Lady.”

And without waiting for permission, she reached for me again, so I jerked my body back.

“What do you think you’re doing…?”

“What did you mean, I’d get pelted with stones?”

At my sudden question, Eston narrowed her brow.

“…You’re not seriously asking because you don’t know, are you?”

“Yes, I’m asking because I don’t know.”

“Oh, right. The amnesia.”

She replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

“The world really is unfair.”

“……”

“Some people can commit attempted murder and then just claim they don’t remember and shrug it off. Some of us have to leave dying family behind to come heal that very person.”

“Eston! How dare you say such things to Her Ladyship!”

The butler yelled, scandalized by her insolent remark.

But Eston didn’t stop.

“And the Young Master, who had to rush out to do damage control because he feared a riot—how is that fair? Don’t you agree?”

“Eston Kenderson! Keep your mouth shut, this instant!”

No, don’t shut up.

I asked because I wanted to know.

The butler, always trying to stop things, was starting to feel annoying.

“Butler. I’m fine, so please step outside.”

Even though I told him to go, he shook his head stubbornly.

“Milady, it’s all nonsense, you don’t need to pay attention.”

“Still, wouldn’t it be better for me to know what I don’t know?”

Eston added mischievously,

“She’s right. If you want your memory back, you ought to be informed, don’t you think, Butler?”

“That’s enough! Eston, come with me this instant—!”

Unable to bear it any longer, the butler grabbed her by the arm to drag her out.

I finally let out a deep sigh.

“…Haah. Butler, didn’t you hear me? I told you to leave.”

“But, Milady, this really isn’t something you need to know…!”

“That’s for me to decide.”

My voice turned cold, and the butler hesitated, glancing back at me.

‘I wanted to try being a kinder Edith since I had lost my memory. Why can’t these people understand my feelings?’

I reached out and picked up one of the larger perfume bottles from the vanity.

It had a nice weight, felt good in my hand.

“This is strange. I was fine until a moment ago, but when you don’t listen, I keep wanting to throw this at you.”

“L-Lady Edith…”

“Why is that, I wonder?”

I tilted my head as if I really didn’t know, and the butler flinched.

Eston, who hadn’t stopped with her sarcasm even as she was being dragged out, also changed her expression.

I gently shook the perfume bottle at them.

“This is the last time. Would you please step out, Butler?”

“…I’ll wait just outside the door.”

Fortunately, this time he listened.

The butler released Eston’s arm and bowed to me.

“If anything happens, please call for me immediately.”

“Nancy, you too.”

“Y-Y es!”

The quick-witted maid made straight for the door without a peep.

Click.

At last, silence settled over the room.

“Now. Let’s have a proper conversation, Eston.”

I set the perfume bottle gently back in its place and smiled at her.

“So this attempted murder you mentioned. Were you talking about me, by any chance?”

“……”

Like the butler earlier, Eston flinched.

Staring at me as if I were insane, she finally managed a reply.

“Who else would I mean?”

“I told you twice, I’m asking because I don’t know.”

Erasing my smile and fixing her with a cold stare, Eston shrank back again.
