A World Where You All Are The Villains - Chapter 7.2
But only for a moment. She soon lifted her chin defiantly, her eyes filled with rebelliousness.
“Who would I have tried to kill? That Purifier your father mentioned yesterday? Are you close with her?”
“…No.”
“If not, then are you blaming me because your family died due to a Gate outbreak?”
Suddenly, Eston fired back at me, her face trembling with emotion.
“If the Your Ladyship hadn’t put the Purifier in danger, that whole area would’ve been fine!”
“……”
“The people exposed to miasma would all have been purified too!”
I couldn’t help but let out a hollow laugh at how absurd it sounded.
“So, after the Gate closed, the Purifier left without doing her job properly?”
“Well, do you think the Purifier would want to stay there after almost dying because of you, Ducal Lady?”
This was the first I’d heard of this.
There was nothing like this behind the scenes in the novel.
Well, I guess. The novel says as soon as the male leads rescued that woman, she immediately fainted and were moved to the capital. There wouldn’t have been time for any purification.
You can’t expect every little detail to show up in the story’s progression. Just like how there was never an explanation for why the villainess kidnapped the female lead.
Regrettably, the protagonist was far too busy to worry about every extra’s death.
But that’s beside the point.
‘Why are you taking this out on me instead of going to Llewellyn directly?’
Am I just an easy target because I’m the Ducal Lady?
Just because I lost my memory, do you think you can blame every crime on me?
Having more or less figured out the backstory of the ‘stone-throwing’, I muttered irritably.
“What a way to take your anger out. Do you not care that I almost died?”
“Well, if you hadn’t harbored ill intent and kidnapped the Purifier in the first place…”
“Who says I kidnapped her out of ill intent?”
“…What?”
Eston looked momentarily dumbfounded.
‘Right, exactly.’
This episode simply ends with the villainess dying miserably.
There’s no actual evidence that Edith kidnapped Llewellyn with the intent to kill her.
“Maybe, like you, I desperately wanted purification and begged for help. From what I’ve heard, Ezenia is a precious place to me too.”
“Ha. Well…”
“You’re not just blindly believing one side’s story and accusing me of a crime, are you?”
My shameless and confident response clearly flustered Eston.
Her voice lost some of its bite as she answered,
“…You always disliked the Purifier, Ducal Lady! Not just me, but everyone in the territory thinks so. Because of you, people exposed to miasma lost their chance to be purified…”
“The world really is unfair, isn’t it? Someone barely survives from a monster’s jaws and gets treated like a scapegoat, while someone else abandons their duty unscathed and gets sympathy.”
When I threw her words right back at her, Eston’s eyes began to shake.
“If you have time to vent at the wrong person, why not go volunteer instead?”
“Don’t speak so carelessly when you don’t even know what happened! While you were being pampered here, the rest of us—!”
In the middle of snapping back, Eston abruptly closed her mouth.
“…Ha. Forget it.”
Maybe arguing with me had drained her mental energy, because she looked exhausted as she rubbed her face.
Then she bowed deeply to me.
“I was thoughtless and rude to you, Ducal Lady. Please forgive my impertinence.”
“……”
“Then, I’ll begin the treatment.”
At that moment, an ominous energy suddenly erupted from Eston’s body as she approached me.
And then.
Above Eston’s head appeared the same number I had seen over Ethan yesterday.
Ooong…
At the same time, black smoke surged up from her feet and in an instant reached up to her neck.
‘89%?!’
I was shocked at such a dangerously high rampage meter.
‘She can’t use her ability anymore.’
As soon as I thought that, I hurriedly slapped away her hand, which had been reaching toward me to use her healing power.
Thwack—!
“Ah…!”
“That’s enough.”
“Your Ladyship!”
Startled by my sudden refusal, Eston glared at me sharply.
But there was no other choice.
“It looks like you’re the one who needs treatment, not me.”
“What are you talking about…? I’m perfectly fine!”
No, you’re not fine at all.
I don’t know the details, but if Eston is skilled enough to be employed by the ducal house, her Awakener rank must be quite high.
And she did say her family was dying.
‘She must have overused her power while being continually exposed to miasma.’
I wanted to tell her to go see a Purifier immediately.
But to do that, I’d have to reveal my own ability.
After a brief hesitation, I finally spoke in a heavy tone.
“You should have someone else check your condition as soon as possible.”
“Ha! I’m a healer myself, what are you talking about?”
“Recently, haven’t you sometimes blacked out while standing? You’ve been getting dizzy a lot, and you’ve had several nosebleeds too.”
She froze up, her body going stiff.
“H-How did you…?”
“You’re having a nosebleed right now.”
