Drip, drip.

A thin trickle of blood silently streamed down from one side of her nose, soon dripping steadily.

“Ah…”

Eston hurriedly clamped a hand over her nose.

It looked like she was about to use her healing ability, as a white light began to glow from her hand.

Watching the miasma churning beneath her chin, I warned her.

“It’d be better not to use your ability for a while.”

“That’s none of your business.”

But Eston ignored my warning and instantly stopped her nosebleed.

Then, irritably, she pulled a handkerchief from her pocket and wiped away the blood.

“More importantly, how did you know about my condition? Is the ducal house spying on me or something?”

“Spying? Hah. What would be the point of spying on the likes of you?”

I scoffed and added,

“Even if that were true, I have no reason to tell you anything, honestly.”

“…Ducal Lady.”

“I’ll consider my treatment finished, so you may leave now.”

As I pointed at the door, Eston bit down hard on her lip.

My words clearly unsettled her, but she didn’t seem willing to swallow her pride and press further.

“……”

After staring me down for a while, she soon spun around and left the room without so much as a farewell.

‘Has she not suffered enough from Edith yet? That attitude, honestly…’

I frowned in displeasure, muttering to myself, then flopped down on the bed.

“Ugh, whatever. I did what I could.”

I figured she must feel anxious about something herself, which is why she reacted that way.

Pre-rampage symptoms were often similar to simple fatigue, so the Awakened tended to overlook them.

Of course, even so, actually reaching the point of rampage was extremely rare.

Sensitive Awakened ones like the male leads could sense the buildup of miasma themselves, and in my original world, the authorities managed them thoroughly—isolating them, suppressing powers with drugs, or in extreme cases, euthanizing them.

I didn’t know how things were done in this world.

There was hardly anything about rampages in the novel to begin with…

“…Well, I guess the female lead can handle it.”

Yeah. Since there’s already a great Purifier, why should I worry about it?

What was more important was my current predicament.

Not being able to get outside.

“Hm. What should I do…”

I fell into thought.

The reason I wanted to get outside was because I had something I wanted to test.

Whether I could use the ability I originally had here, too.

‘Well, since my soul is still mine.’

Of course, I knew it was probably impossible.

This body had awakened and possessed a different ability now…

And it would be weird if another Purifier showed up in a world that already had one.

“So could I be the protagonist too?”

Even as I said it, I couldn’t help but let out a hollow laugh.

When I first read this novel, the reason I’d felt so uneasy—wondering if it was a threat sent by a competitor—was because my ability was basically the same as the female lead Llewellyn’s.

‘Purification.’

Unfortunately, I wasn’t nearly as impressive as Llewellyn, the renowned Purifier.

Even purifying an area the size of a palm would leave me exhausted after struggling for ages.

‘At best, I’m probably D-Class.’

I’d never officially measured my rank, but my ability was so pitiful it was embarrassing to admit I was Awakened.

Still, instead of being discouraged, I used myself as a test subject to develop cure-1.

I might have been useless as an Awakened, but my academic background and scientific career were anything but useless.

‘I was finally at the last stage of development.’

Now, on the brink of success, what am I even doing here, damn it…

“…Come to think of it, I could have tested it on Eston.”

As I followed my train of thought, I suddenly realized there was a way to test it without going outside, and belatedly clicked my tongue.

Thanks to this body’s strange ability to see rampage percentages, I could immediately check whether purification worked.

“I should’ve just let her treat me instead of sending her away.”

Disappointing, but oh well. There would be other chances to meet Eston.
