And by that point, Cielo would usually fall asleep first.

Even after Oscar had grown up somewhat, Cielo still whispered words of affection to him. But now, Cielo would mumble in Oscar’s arms and fall asleep like that.

After preparing the bathwater, Oscar checked the letters and official documents that had arrived for Cielo in the early morning.

While reading through them, Oscar’s expression twisted.

“…The crown prince is returning?”

He quickly turned to look at Cielo, but Cielo was still sound asleep, completely limp.

Oscar remembered that alpha.

He clearly remembered the disgusting pheromones that vanished under his presence, even though he hadn’t even manifested yet.

The day his master had first shown the emotion called fear.

‘No wonder he hasn’t been seen around lately.’

Oscar gritted his teeth. By now, Ryan must have heard the news as well, so he figured they would need to talk about the crown prince soon.

“Oscar…”

As Oscar was organizing the letters and documents on the table, Cielo called to him. Oscar hurried over, and half-awake, Cielo reached out a hand.

Cielo touched Oscar’s cheek, now slimmer with some of the baby fat fading, then stretched his body and sat up.

Then, as if it were a habit, he placed a kiss on Oscar’s forehead.

“Did you sleep well, Master?”

“Yes. Good morning.”

“I prepared your bath. I sorted the letters and official documents too, and I’ve laid out the clothes you’ll wear today.”

Oscar spoke brightly, as if hoping for praise.

Cielo reached out and gently patted his head.

“You really didn’t have to do all that,” he replied, but he didn’t forget to say thank you.

As Cielo slowly stepped away from the bed, he looked up at Oscar and spoke.

“You look taller again…”

Not long ago, he only had to look up slightly, but now he had to tilt his head back more to meet Oscar’s eyes.

“How strange. Oscar keeps growing so well… so why am I not?”

Mumbling, Cielo trudged toward the bathroom.

Oscar watched his dazed back and quietly covered his mouth, stifling a laugh. He held his breath, worried that Cielo might hear him.

‘…I’m happy.’

He remembered something Cielo once said.

“I don’t need anything else. As long as you’re happy, that’s enough for me.”

And as time passed, Oscar was beginning to feel that happiness.

The visions of his parents that used to torment him every night like nightmares no longer appeared. Sometimes they would pop up in dreams and choke him, but whenever that happened, Cielo would pat his back.

Oscar stared at Cielo’s back as he entered the bathroom, then looked down at his own hands.

Compared to three years ago, his height, his hands, and his body had all grown incredibly.

Without taking trait suppressants and with proper meals, he was growing just as he was meant to.

‘But then why…’

Seventeen.

It was the age when most trait-bearers went through their manifestation, yet Oscar still hadn’t.

He had been experiencing the signs for years. Right before or right after Cielo’s heat cycle began, whenever he was near him, he could smell the scent of acacia.

“Oscar?”

Just then, Cielo, now out of the bath, called to him.

“Is something wrong? You don’t look well.”

Cielo reached out and touched Oscar’s cheek. As Oscar leaned into his hand, he finally said what he was thinking.

“I was just suddenly thinking about my trait. What if I never manifest…”

Alpha or omega.

Dominant or recessive.

Those with traits gained stronger abilities after manifestation.

Before his own manifestation, Cielo had only been able to treat bruises or fractures, like Oscar could now. But after manifesting as a dominant omega, he became strong enough to save people on the verge of death.

That’s why Oscar wanted to manifest. He wanted to grow stronger and take some of the burden off his master.

“What if I end up being a beta, neither alpha nor omega…”

Would Cielo come to hate him?

He didn’t want to become someone useless.

Though he no longer felt the pressure to be helpful to everyone, he still wanted to be someone needed by Cielo.

Oscar clutched the hem of Cielo’s robe as if begging.

He didn’t say another word, but Cielo quietly held him, as if he understood exactly what Oscar was thinking.

“Traits are just traits. They don’t determine your worth.”

“…”

“Whether you’re an alpha, an omega, or a beta. What matters is that you are Oscar. That’s the only thing that’s important to me.”

“Master…”

“So… I love you today too, Oscar.”

Cielo smiled and gently kissed him on the forehead.

He still looked at Oscar with the eyes and gestures of someone looking at a child. But Oscar didn’t mind that at all.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

The comforting sound of a heartbeat and the soft scent of acacia were so deeply lovable.
