Maybe his pheromones were just more disgusting than expected.

It smelled like a half-smoked cigarette that had been dunked in water. No, it was more like the stench of hundreds of cigarette butts floating in a shallow puddle.

“I was wondering which bastard was gagging from my pheromones—turns out it was you?”

Eli, who had been kicking a patient moments ago, approached with a grin. The closer he got, the thicker the scent of his pheromones became.

“Cielo.”

Ryan urgently grabbed Cielo’s hand. Just the act of holding it seemed to lessen the effect of Eli’s disgusting pheromones.

“That’s no way to act, Esteban. Toward the man who will become your husband. I told you already, you’d better get used to my pheromones quickly.”

Cielo furrowed his brows.

“Don’t talk like that about something that hasn’t even been confirmed yet.”

The sharp tone left his mouth before he realized it.

But Eli acted as though this kind of response from Cielo was routine, smiling lazily as he spoke.

“Right, you used to say that. But guess what? The Duke of Esteban promised that if I returned victorious from the war, he would approve our marriage.”

“…What did you say?”

If someone had ears, it would be obvious which direction that war had gone.

Victory had been guaranteed.

In fact, the war might have ended even sooner if Eli hadn’t gone.

And yet, that man called “father” had sent Eli to the battlefield, knowing exactly what kind of person he was. The emperor allowed it too.

It was a farce. The Esteban household must have needed the title “Crown Prince son-in-law who brought victory in war.”

Did they really not know what he had done to his son?

No. The Duke of Esteban, who had met them on the day of the coming-of-age ceremony, must have known what had happened between them and still forced the marriage.

“…I wasn’t told any of this.”

“So what? Do you really think your opinion matters for this marriage?”

“Yes. Even if it doesn’t matter, I will still state it. I refuse. I reject marrying Your Highness and having any kind of relationship beyond what is necessary.”

The last time they met, Cielo had lost his composure due to memories and pheromones.

But with someone like this, it was necessary to speak firmly.

That he hated him.

To stay away.

“Then I’ll just reject that rejection.”

“…”

“At the upcoming celebration, our engagement will be announced. And starting with your next heat, you’ll be spending it with me, Cielo. Aren’t you curious what a child born from our genes might look like?”

“…”

“But before that, we should fix that nasty attitude of yours.”

As Cielo glared sharply at him, Eli met his eyes and released a strong burst of pheromones over Cielo’s head.

Cielo reflexively covered his mouth from the nausea. Ryan stepped in, pulling Cielo behind him and smothering Eli’s pheromones with his own.

“You…!”

As Ryan intervened, Eli hesitated and took a step back.

A recessive pheromone could never overcome a dominant one. Eli’s pheromones were swallowed whole by Ryan’s and vanished without a trace.

But Ryan didn’t stop there.

He released his own pheromones, sharply honed, straight at Eli.

“Ghk…”

Eli’s face began to turn pale. Like a helpless pup before a wild beast, he trembled and ground his teeth.

“You… how dare you… who do you think you’re—”

“Stop being greedy, brother. I don’t care about the rest, but you can’t have Cielo.”

“…Ha!”

“If you’ve already taken everything else I had, then leave me just this one thing.”

Ryan said with a smile.

But the veins at his temple showed just how hard he was holding back his anger.

“What if I don’t leave him?”

“…”

“What are you going to do? I’m the crown prince of this country. The emperor is my father!”

Eli laughed like a madman.

But his body was instinctively distancing itself from Ryan. When the pheromones of a dominant alpha pressed in with fury, fear took over and forced him back.

Ryan walked up to him and said in a low voice, just loud enough for him to hear.

“It would be wise to make the right choice.”

“…”

“I’m not very well-mannered, you know. I bite.”
