May Every Wound Be Fatal - Chapter 48.2
It was a monologue, but Allin answered faithfully.
“This is… not Kaldirac, but Elmaril.”
The awkward smile she flashed afterward was quite suspicious.
“So you are saying I handpicked you myself?”
Allin’s voice shrank even further.
“…No. I came to serve the Queen through the recommendation of the Council of Nobles….”
In truth, Allin was a lady who was a noble in name only. While seeking a job at the royal palace to make a living, she had coincidentally become the Queen’s maid simply because she lacked any political connections.
In other words, Allin was indeed one of the few people belonging to Reyna, being neither the Duke’s person nor the King’s.
“I thought so…. No wonder I felt you were not quite to my liking.”
Even if she had not been to Reyna’s liking then or now.
“…I offer my sincerest apologies, my Queen.”
Allin looked dejected and bowed her head. However, Reyna, to whom everything felt foreign, did not have the mental capacity to worry about the maid’s feelings.
For some reason, the more she listened to the explanations, the more everything seemed beyond understanding. No matter how much she had married the King, it was strange that not a single person from the Ducal House was by her side. Above all, she heard she had hovered between life and death for fifteen days, yet the fact that there had not been a single letter from the Ducal House during that time was the most incomprehensible of all.
Various questions arose, bringing with them an ominous premonition.
However, she did not yet have the strength to scrutinize the situation closely. No matter how hard she tried, she could remember nothing, and the pain starting from her leg was still thumping through her entire body.
‘I don’t understand anything….’
Reyna gave up on thinking and squeezed her eyes shut.
Allin and the young housemaids whispered softly as if trying to soothe her.
“The palace is in an uproar, my Queen. The fact that you were gravely injured must remain a rumor at all costs. For the time being, meeting outsiders is….”
“The scholar says that for now, you must focus solely on your recovery.”
“The memories you lost will return soon. So please, do not be afraid and….”
But Reyna could not be easily calmed. She could be certain of only one thing: something serious had happened to her. It felt like she was having a very bad dream from which she could not wake.
With that, fear became uncontrollable. Everything felt ominous and frightening. It reached a point where tears welled up behind her closed eyelids.
Suddenly, the man who had knelt before her and sobbed uncontrollably came to Reyna’s mind.
“…Reyna.”
The man who had been even sadder than she was about the fact that she had lost her memory. He had cried so sorrowfully that Reyna even felt a sense of pity for him.
Reyna slowly lifted her eyelids and asked in a low voice.
“…What was the relationship between the King and me?”
At that sudden question, Allin, who had been watching Reyna with a worried gaze, faltered.
“If you ask what kind of relationship…”
“Just…. Whether His Majesty loved me, things like that.”
Allin could not hide her complicated expression for a moment, but Reyna, who was staring blankly into space as if lost in thought, did not notice her agitation.
Having barely regained her composure, Allin whispered softly so as not to be heard by others.
“I do not know if it is my place to say this but…. Yes, His Majesty loves the Queen.”
At that answer, Reyna’s tearful green eyes wavered with a faint sense of relief.
Feeling that Reyna’s fear had subsided slightly, Allin continued speaking.
“While the Queen was unconscious and hovering between life and death, His Majesty stayed by the Queen’s side the entire time. He wiped your body himself and even fed you medicine.”
“…I see.”
Reyna replied while searching her memories.
Come to think of it, it felt as though someone had always been by her side while she was drifting between life and death. The one who wiped away her sweat, massaged her body so her limbs would not stiffen, and held her tight when the pain was unbearable. It seemed that person was indeed the King.
“His Majesty will protect the Queen until the end. So…. Please do not be too afraid.”
“Alright….”
Her vague anxiety had not completely vanished, but Reyna was finally able to fall asleep.
Though she had no memory of him at all, a faint belief bloomed in a corner of her heart that the King would protect her, just as Allin had said. From that day on, Reyna waited for him without realizing it.
However, contrary to Reyna’s expectations, the King did not come to visit her after that.
