The Saint Wants to Rest - Chapter 17.2
“What?”
The Management Bureau agents immediately headed toward the banks of the Han River in vehicles loaded with Gate measurement equipment. The surrounding area had already been cordoned off by the police. Looking up at the sky, the Gate entrance appeared much larger than it had from a distance.
“I have never seen a Gate form in the sky before.”
“I haven’t either.”
Even so, at this distance, the Gate’s levels could be measured with the machinery. At first, the needle that sat at the lowest point began to move upward, gaining speed. It quickly surpassed the numerical value representing an A-rank Gate. However, it was still within a predictable range. The problem came after that.
The newly emerged Gate exceeded even the typical measurements for an S-rank Gate. The needle spun round and round in the air, unable to rise any further.
“Heh.”
The agent operating the machine muttered with a dazed expression.
“Can we even call this an S-rank Gate?”
Perhaps a Gate of an even higher rank had appeared. Realizing this, Yoon Tae-gyeom grit his teeth. Just as the world was starting to improve bit by bit, another hardship had been handed down. If a god existed, this simply could not happen. But even if he resented a god, nothing would change.
“Contact the guilds.”
This was not a problem the Management Bureau could solve alone.
“Yes, sir!”
Yoon So-ra moved hurriedly.
***
When naming the famous guilds in the Republic of Korea, people always spoke of these five:
Saseong, Haetae, Phoenix, Stigma, and Peace.
Among them, Saseong, Peace, and Haetae were large guilds sponsored by major corporations. Phoenix had no sponsor, but because the Guild Master was S-rank, the individuals gathered there were quite impressive. Stigma was not a large-scale guild, but like Phoenix, its Guild Master was an S-rank Awakened, and it had the best reputation because many of its members were people of conviction.
For that reason, the Guild Masters of these five guilds all gathered in the Management Bureau’s conference room.
“An S-rank Gate. Hasn’t Hong Seo-yun recently cleared an S-rank?”
At the words of Jeong Yeon-hwa from Haetae, Park Seo-ri from the Peace Guild shot back.
“That was a Mutating Gate. You know that an S-rank in a Mutating Gate carries a different meaning.”
Perhaps because she used ice-related abilities, she was strangely on bad terms with Hong Seo-yun.
“Still, an S-rank is an S-rank.”
In fact, the only guilds here that were on good terms were Phoenix and Stigma. The others all had different corporations as their backbacks, so it was impossible for them to get along.
“No, I mean, why are you all doing this when the person involved is staying quiet?”
Hong Seo-yun cut in. At that, Park Seo-ri furrowed her brow and turned her head away.
“Let’s just stick to the basics. The basics.”
Lee Cheol-su from Saseong, who was dressed in the most orderly fashion, spoke while drinking the pre-prepared brown rice green tea.
“Just drink coffee like a normal person. I don’t know why you have to be so fastidious every time.”
“Caffeine is not good for the body.”
“Green tea has caffeine in it too, you know?”
“It is a small amount compared to coffee.”
While they were spouting useless talk, the conference room door opened and the people they were waiting for entered. It was the real power of the Management Bureau, Yoon Tae-gyeom and Yoon So-ra, along with Vermouth .
As soon as Vermouth entered the conference room, everyone’s eyes turned toward him.
“Hello. It is a pleasure to meet you.”
Lee Cheol-su from Saseong reached out first and greeted him warmly. While Haetae and Peace were subsidiaries of parent companies, Saseong was a guild directly under a major corporation. Lee Cheol-su was the grandson of the current company president and was competing with his older brothers for the next right of succession. Because of that, he was always eager to recruit talent.
“It is a pleasure to meet you.”
Vermouth smiled brightly and bowed his head slightly. He did not reach out his hand, as if he did not wish to shake hands. Seeing that, the corners of Lee Cheol-su’s mouth twitched, but he did not add any further comments. Once people reach the level of an S-rank Awakened, many possess inflated egos. Thus, he thought he couldn’t really say anything over such a small matter.
On the other hand, Jeong Yeon-hwa raised an eyebrow at the sight. She did not like Vermouth’s arrogant posture. Furthermore, it bothered her that the time he appeared overlapped with when part of the Blue House collapsed. Since Haetae had been unfairly stigmatized back then, her gaze naturally wasn’t kind.
Park Seo-ri took an attitude similar to Lee Cheol-su. Unlike Jeong Yeon-hwa, she was not an S-rank Awakened. Therefore, Vermouth was a top priority for recruitment. She didn’t want to do anything to needlessly get on his nerves.
Hong Seo-yun smiled broadly like a person without a thought in the world, and Choi Jae-heon quickly turned his gaze away from Vermouth. In the meantime, Yoon Tae-gyeom received the materials from Yoon So-ra and began the briefing on the newly opened S-rank Gate.
“It’s a mess.”
Hong Seo-yun whispered to Choi Jae-heon beside him. Choi Jae-heon did not bother to reply, but he agreed with his thoughts. With more than half of them harboring other intentions, he wasn’t sure if things would work out properly.
