No, damn it…!

A penalty occurred even when it dropped by more than 10 percent too quickly?

Kim Jihwan was already beside me, but because my condition was so poor, the Affection Level didn’t rise easily. The Affection Level Increase Coupons were inside my desk drawer too. I hurriedly turned around to head toward the classroom.

The roulette will now activate.

The roulette wheel appeared as though blocking my path.

It spun lightly, then stopped at one section.

―…Crackle, ah, ah, mic che… crackle.

In an instant, the sky turned red, and everything in the world was stained the color of fresh blood. Why did one incident always lead directly into another? I seriously had the worst luck.

―Mu… i… crackle, bloo….

Something continued coming through the school speakers along with an ominous, sharp metallic noise.

“Le, leave, early leave form, le, le….”

The homeroom teacher, who had been speaking normally only moments ago, suddenly had blue and red veins bulging across his face. His head seemed to swell, then began jerking wildly from side to side like a chicken twisting its neck. Then the teacher abruptly stopped moving and made a sound.

“…Ah.”

A very brief silence, and then.

Pop-.

His head burst.

“…Fuck…. Mmph… Urgh.”

Kim Jihwan’s already pale complexion turned deathly white. He staggered, then ultimately vomited. It wasn’t only the homeroom teacher. The heads of the other teachers and adults, excluding the students, burst one after another, and the teachers’ office was quickly covered in flesh, blood, and pieces of organs.

Creeeak-.

―Hoo, hoo, ah, ah, mic check.

A young child’s voice blew into the microphone and continued the announcement in an innocent tone. I rounded my back and covered Kim Jihwan’s trembling head with the gym jacket I had been wearing. Then I calmly waited for the next words to come through the speaker.

―The mugunghwa flower.

Screams and the sounds of people running came from another classroom.

―Has bloomed.

Pop-pop-pop-.

Thud, slam, pop!

This time, far more things burst simultaneously, followed by the sounds of bodies striking walls and screams of despair as people collapsed. Only then did I finally gain a rough understanding of the genres written on this damn roulette.

Death Game

What refined taste you have.

I raced down the hallway with Kim Jihwan.

As I ran, I recalled the various genres written on the roulette. It had been packed with genres commonly used in stories where people died or were injured, along with adult-oriented genres. No matter what it landed on, every option looked as though it would make me suffer even more than the ‘Zombie Apocalypse.’

―The mugunghwa….

A slow voice drifted from the speakers. Listening to it, I turned around and spoke to Kim Jihwan.

“Jihwan-ah, be careful. It’s slippery.”

“…….”

Kim Jihwan didn’t answer.

The hallway floor was littered with the bodies of students from unknown classes, school employees, blood, and fragments of shattered heads. Kim Jihwan’s empty eyes stared straight ahead as though refusing to take in anything.

“Are you okay?”

“…Shut up.”

―Flower has bloomed.

Pop-pop- Pop!

The sounds of things bursting echoed through the hallway, fewer than before. The phrase ‘The mugunghwa flower has bloomed’ had already been broadcast throughout the school several times. The hallway had become silent, probably because the quick-witted students had realized what they needed to do to survive.

Then again, the students who would scream and cause a commotion were probably already dead.

“…….”

“…….”

Kim Jihwan was also one of those who had figured out how to survive. Whenever the phrase ended, we calmly froze our bodies. Then we carefully surveyed our surroundings together. Kim Jihwan was perceptive and highly adaptable, which made him easy to play alongside.

―The mugunghwa.

When we reached the central staircase, we had a brief argument.

“Baek Hanrim, are you insane?! Why are you going to the broadcasting room?!”

Kim Jihwan, who had remained quiet until now, raised his voice in agitation when I said I would go to the broadcasting room and put an end to this situation.

“I think this will end if I catch the seeker.”

That was how a ‘Death Game’ worked. Since it was a game, there had to be a winner and a loser. Therefore, the most efficient option was to catch the seeker and end it.

―Flower.

“What if it doesn’t? What are you going to do then? And why do you have to be the one to end it…!”

―Has bloomed.

We closed our mouths and froze.

T/N:

The mugunghwa is (hibiscus) considered as Korea’s national flower. The name itself translates to ‘eternal blossom that never fades.’

Fun fact, this is the same ‘red light green light’ game featured in Squid Game.
